I've just tried to service my elderly mother-in-laws Izy (she has a gardener to cut the lawns) which was in a bad state rust wise. There was a hole in the usual place on the deck which I was able to shape some ally sheet over and pop rivet on.

Whilst I had it I decided that i should give it a service as I suspect that it hasn't been done for years. Did the usual, air filter, spark plug and new oil. I also took the fuel tank off and gave it a flush out.

Put everything back together and started her up. Fired after a couple of pulls on choke but wouldn't run on the normal throttle setting. Let it warm up a bit on choke but still the same, just hunts all the time.

Did some Google research and that threw up carb problems. So took it apart and stripped it down as far as I could but couldn't get the emulsifier tube out even with gentle pressure from above. Squirted carb cleaner down every hole including the idle jet and up through the emulsion tube and everything looked fine. Cleaned out fuel bowl and ran some petrol through the disconnected fuel pipe which was fine and then put it back together after struggling with the gaskets/black spacer/metal plate/carb and air filter box.

Started it up and just the same!!

Any suggestions please?

Always a sign of a weak mixture, if it runs better with the choke out once hot, which suggests carburettor jets or an air leak.

Not trying to teach granny, etc but you had removed the main jet before trying to prise the ET down through as Ive never failed to loosen one before, although they are often a fiddle to get them to drop right out

I'm pretty confidence apart from the emulsifier tube, everything was clean and clear with carb cleaner passing through and the main jet and idle jet clear with a small wire able to pass through. Even the emulsifier tube I was able to pass a wire up through. Not sure what else I could do.

When assembling I did smear the various gasket interfaces with silicone gasket paste so I would hope there is no air leak there.

Yes, the main jet unscrewed fairly easily. As I said I did apply some pressure to the top of the tube but did want to go mad. Also the screwdriver blade gets close to the throttle flap so didn't want to bend it.

Is the head to carb joint OK? Old trick, a drop of oil around that joint area will show up an air leak.

There are about 4 pairs of holes at right angles to the ET which need to be clear and to do that the tube needs to come out

Sometimes the emulsion tube will jolt free if you give the stem (main jet out) a rap downwards onto a piece of timber.

What does the ET actually do. There is a hole straight through its centre from the main jet so the fuel can get up through but what do the cross holes do.

The fuel goes up the main tube, the cross holes feed air into the fuel inside the tube and the vacuum from the intake, then draws the mixed air/ fuel past the inlet valve and into the cylinder.

So would that lack of air in the mixture cause the engine to hunt?

Richard

No, the lack of fuel/ the weak mixture caused it to hunt. When you gave it choke, it enriched the mixture enough for it to run.

May be a daft idea - but has the fuel tap been turned off and back on but on incompletely?

And my Honda Izy has an auto choke so I was surprised to see the comment about chokes.

The later models have an auto choke, operated by a heat sensitive capsule.....normally they work fine but there are a few rogues about!
Earlier models had a manual choke on the throttle lever.
