Outdoor socket

I now have the outside socket. The ultimate preference would be to drill from the outside inwards but I’m guessing this option isn’t quite as easy as the inside socket (the one that will be spurred off) is already fitted so it’ll be tricky to locate easily.

Any tips on this please? I guess that with the outside socket being so big, any brick damage (blown face) on the outside will be hidden but not ideal?

I assume this is a cavity wall?

Some careful measuring will allow you to drill a hole from inside to the cavity, and another hole from outside to the cavity. 20mm is best.

This, using a wire coat hanger folded out, you can find your way through both holes, and tie the cable onto this, and pull through.

An in inch longer than the thickness of a block. They are 100mm ish so go for a drill at least 120mm long. You’ll feel when you penetrate into the cavity from both sides.
The key is accurate measurement of the hole position. Remember that the ground level is a lot lower outside!

I would ( and have ) drilled from inside the full diameter hole as far as the cavity, then again from the inside a small pilot drill through to the outside. Then drilled the full diameter from the outside as far as the cavity using the pilot hole as guide.

So when you say a small pilot drill what sort of width are you talking? I guess this is less prone to creating damage on the outside brick face? A long drill it would be needed too?

I used a 600 mm long 10 mm diameter drill.

You should also try to make the hole slope slightly lower at the outside, to prevent water travelling in to the building. A slight slope will do.

Thanks. It’s not necessary to use any tubing of any kind to run the twin & earth in at all is it?

Probably more trouble than it's worth.

But use a waterproof compound or sealant around the hole outside, and if the cable passes through the back of the outdoor socket, put plenty around that too.
