Looking out for unexpected electricty usage, however, is highly relevant.
 
He needs something accurate to check his meter, not something that shows when an immersion is switched on.
He needs to know the difference between 150KWh and 300KWh which is either 50% or 100%

What he needs is useful advice.

What he does not need is something with a resolution of 1%
What he does not need is advcie verging on useless.

Double oven but use only the main fan assist oven on the whole - guess at 4kW used for about 1 hour per day so 4kWh per day > 28kWh per week > 120kWh per month

It will not be a constant 4kw, rather once to temperature it will be off and on, mostly off. CH systems draw some current when running, winter is the time when they are mostly used.

Rather than guessing, test it. Turn absolutely everything off, then switch a 1, 2, or 3 kw load on, which is not thermostat controlled - note the reading at the start, then again one hour later.

Yes, I had figured that after I originally posted :) I guess at about 1kWh per use.

Your tumble dryer probably uses more than you'd think. Mine accounts for a large part of my total bill.
Do you have a power shower?

No power shower and the tumble dryer is new. We don't over use the dryer but the new one is probably used more than the previous one although it is one that has a sensor to stop when dry. It could be that but not convinced at 4kWh per day drop


I have been doing more days in the office of late but even before COVID the monthly usage was 200kWh+. I would have expected my usage to have gone up during my time working at home
 
Don't forget May and June are generally warmer months. As said set aside some money.

Just a bit of an update

I have recently submitted a third reading and the meter is definitely wrong. I bought an Owl from eBay and that shows what I would expct to be using over a 24 hour period. Looking at the meter the dial is not rotating and will only rotate briefly when tapped

You need to inform your supplier of the issue urgently, to avoid a large estimated bill based upon the meter being faulty and under reading.

Owls are not accurate. They tend to read high as they don't take account of voltage or power factor. They only measure current and you cannot get kWh from that.

However if the meter dial is not rotating when it should that is another matter.
 
My owls are accurate. I sometimes check by flicking on the 3000W kettle for a moment. They are not so accurate below 350W, but good enough that I can see when a light is turned on of off, or an extractor fan left running at night.

Voltage in my house is always a bit over 240v

Measuring current and multiplying by 240 is a really good way to show Watts. You should try it.

If the reading is out by 5% it will be plenty accurate enough for the OPs purposes.

How can it possibly be? It does not measure voltage, it does not measure phase angle. A kettle is a resistive load which is what an Owl assumes.

WRONG. Watts = current times voltage times cosine of the phase angle between them.
