Asbestos in Post 2000 New Builds

Hi all,
I am part of a group who are doing a project on construction. It is part of our exams. I've been given the Health & Safety part. I am now on the asbestos containing material section, when it was was used, where it was used, when it was banned and the regulations and guidelines on removal.

As all types of asbestos usage, sales and imports were finally banned on the 24th November 1999 the question I have is:

As anyone ever encountered any form of asbestos in residential homes, domestic, non domestic, commercial, non commercial or any other type of structure that is a new build and was built after the year 2000 ?

It has to be a new build, not a refurbishment or extension to a previous building, just interested in new builds ?

Any encounters amd information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance

I worked with artex for years..
Last lot of asbestos I seen was in artex back in 1989 ish.
Was actually suretex brand that switched to fibre free was last one I seen. Artex dropped asbestos years before but I don't know when. They still test houses built after this date and one I worked on from new came back inconclusive in 2021 even though I know it was fine as I done the ceilings back in 1990.
Think it's hard to test in some products like artex?

As for finding asbestos after 2000. Nope. Not seen it or know of any being sold.

Many thanks for the reply. When you worked with Artex did you use to put the asbestos in to the mix or did it come already mixed ?
If you don't mind me asking how old are you now and did you put any face masks on when dealing with the asbestos. Many thanks

Artex brands came with asbestos in mixed at factory in with the powder. Bags had.... Contains asbestos.... Written on the front
I always thought it was 3-5% but can't confirm.

No mask.

I'm 54 in a few weeks. I was 15 when I first mixed the stuff.

Know of a few pipe laggers working on big boilers that have died. Mixed the powder and packed pipes. Had snow ball fights with they said..

Hopefully if you was born in 1968 and started mixing it when you was 15, that makes 1983 so any health issues should have arisen by now.
When you see the stipple effect like small drops of water on the artex is this the asbestos making it solid ?

Asbestos in artex looks sugary. Like a bag of sugar was mixed in. Look out for it.
Also it was harder because of the animal glues and stipple tended to be sharper. All the patterns were sharper but it's the surgery look that sounds alarm bells.
You can't tell by looking but it should set off alarms.
I've walked in places and said that's got asbestos in the artex. It looks old and room clearly not been decorated for 30 plus years and sharp sugary artex. I'll call it.

The rounded stipple was over watered down artex to save money. Could have asbestos still.

When asbestos was taken out glues were charged to all temperature vs only hot water mix.
Still used warn to mix but the new stuff is much creamer vs the older sugary asbestos type.

Asbestos was a binder and also gave it a fire rating. Guess it was cheap.


Question.. Is there asbestos post 2000 then?

I'd say no.

Father in law put 100s of sheets of asbestos roof on. And asbestos floor tiles.
He died of old age

No. Asbestos was progressively gradually removed from products and banned from the 1970s onwards. Import bans started from the 1980s.

The thing about construction products is that they don't stay in stock forever - many products which get mixed with liquids (e.g. cement, plaster, etc) have a best before date because when they get too old they no longer mix well, nor do they dry/cure evenly, so that limits how much stuff merchants and wholesalers carry in stock, and means that they generally don't have a year's supply in stock, ever.
