You might expect to get a face full of steering wheel, but not if you're a back seat passenger... See 25 second mark.

Worse still, see the VW Santana @ 9:15 or the Comodore @ 13:47.

My BIL drove his 2 year old Golf (mk.1) into the back of one of those artics with an AapHanger (self-stowing fork lift truck, about 3 tonnes worth including a massive cast iron weight at the rear) on the back at about 40 mph. The engine submarined, as it should, but the pedal box came upwards, breaking both his legs just above the knees where they hit the back of the steering wheel. The fire brigade had to cut him out. Just shows how cars have got safer in the meantime

Only time I had an airbag deploy it felt like having got in the ring with Mohammed Ali and the peculiar smell and taste of it stayed with me for a week. Possibly saved me from a broken neck, though, so worth it

I noted the same two. Santana has a Golf after it - very different.

You can see too many heads went around the outside of front airbags. Hence many cars have 10 airbags now.

Here's a jolly set of statistics https://autoily.com/airbag-statistics/

19. The Takata airbag recall was the largest recall in U.S. history.

This recall involved over 70 million vehicles that were recalled by 2019. These airbags caused 15 confirmed deaths after they exploded and sent shrapnel throughout the cabin.
Oops, I have one of those still, in an old Honda. Suppose I'd better get it done...

That's what most of 'em are designed to do, the pedal box has to go somewhere. I 'think' it's part of stage 3 in the front end crash scenario & considered highly survivable. Stage 4 being unlikely to survive & stage 5 being impossible.
