Police officers need food vouchers.

I can't help but smile at that comment motorbiking :)

"given the education and skill level required." lolz

I'm all for the Police and support them in every way. But they are not paid that bad and do have access to very healthy pensions. My pension has suffered since Lock down because I prioritised my money for other things. Let's not forget police officers, teachers and hospital staff have earned money through all of this. Not all of us have.

It seems min pay is £24k and can rise to £39k for some over time. I assume this is correct

On a £24,000 salary, your take home pay will be £19,843 after tax and National Insurance. This equates to £1,654 per month and £382 per week.

Then this
The average UK monthly mortgage repayment is £753. Renting a property costs £821 on average. Monthly mortgage costs have increased 31% in the last ten years. The average first-time buyer deposit is £58,986 – increasing by £11,677 since March 2020.

Another
The average mortgage payment in the UK is £723, with an interest rate of 2.48%. This is based on the most recent study conducted by Santander in 2018.

High deposits reduce mortgage interest rates. The 31% increase since the banking crisis is of interest as rates have been low.

The average Band D council tax set by local authorities in England for 2022-23 is £1,966 ~£164 per month

Current average fuel bill - their annual bills rise from £1,277 to £1,971 per year (based on average usage) say ~£120 per month.

The bobby. Single, married, kids, working wife ??????????????

Looks like the averages come to over £1000 / month for the basics. Run a car, various insurance policies. Maybe a mobile phone contract. land line. Some sort of internet connection. Fuel / transport costs.

The average spend on food per person is £40.30 per week (£175 per month), including groceries and eating out—across all ages and genders. The average weekly food shop for 1 is £26.5 in the UK, plus we spend another £13.8 on eating out or ordering takeaways each week.

Eating out for me might be a cake or something from Gregs for lunch once a week. Take aways - not that often so our food bills are bound to be more than £26.5 a week per person.

Are things tighter for more people than some might think?

When a rozzer next moans at you about their salary ask them to show you their P60.

This is an article on the Police Federation website. The plod union. Police officers are extremely well paid for the work they do given the education and skill level required.
The average starting salary for a graduate in the UK for 2022 is £24,291 – this is a 5% decrease from 2021 (£25,466).

Having worked in areas where there are always loads of graduates around - fact - it doesn't mean that high a pay level in many areas.

It should not be the level of pay that’s in question . It’s the level at which that person puts themselves based on it. Joe average taking home £2000 a month will probably commit 80% of it to mortgage cars insurances pensions hp and payments and contracts for piddling trivialities to keep up with his equally ugly neighbours. As time passes these things become essentials to them , things that they deserve.
When the realisation strikes home that they over stepped the mark and wasted tens of thousands on said trivialities instead of saving for a rainy day their answer invariably is to scream poverty, not look at cutting back to compensate for high inflation and rising interest rates.
In a nutshell a society of shallow materialistic competitors has been created on the back of cheap credit and easily accessible debt.
We’ve all been given the rope to hang ourselves over the last 15 years . I have no sympathy for those of us that chose to put it around our necks.

That is what you like to believe.

it isn’t true.

About the same it was in 1997.

You could say it's self regulating after a fashion. If there is shortage of graduates for some particular job area the universities turn more out.

I'll exaggerate another point as well. :) In years to come a shop assistant will need a degree in business studies. Similar may also happen if too many come out with ones in a particular subject.
