What books do you remember reading as a youngster, soon after you learned to read?

As a teenager I picked up on the likes of Sven Hassel, James Herbert, Stephen King etc,
The old man saw them coming from the window, Tiny moved slowly to pick up his gun, while Le' Legionnare sat there sharpening his knife, humming "come death, come."

I have spent a large part of my leisure time over the years in the international hunt for Sven Hassle. I am sorry to inform you that he does not & never has existed.

Alice in Wonderland and The Wind in the Willows.

I loved the former book and still do, but I never finished the latter.

Art was clearly not to be my calling.

Never my strong point either, but I loved the technical drawing, guess I just lacked the visual imagination. I surprised myself one time though - They took us to a local museum, where there was a stuffed tiger on display, and we were supposed to pick a subject and draw it. It turned into the best thing I ever drew in my life.

Would you say Jackanory has played some huge part in your life story?
In an interview a few years ago about my 'famous' years, I happened to mention Bernard Cribbins influence on my life so far. How important to me reading a good book is & how much his & Willie's time on Jackanory influenced me.

His daughter got a message to me somehow, telling me how much of a fan he was & how pleased he was that I enjoyed that Jackanory experience.

I arranged to meet him & his family in a pub / restaurant somewhere & a good time was had by all.

Has anyone ever asked you Mottie? At what point in your life did you make the conscious decision to become a tw

Alice in Wonderland and The Wind in the Willows.

I loved the former book and still do, but I never finished the latter.

There's a small village on the River Fowey called Lerryn, used to work there quite a bit. Supposedly it's the inspiration for wind in the willows, and the large manor (Ethy House) would have been Toad Hall.
