What's "isn't listening" about 2 people saying they have not encountered ads and Which? saying they have?
I guess not all models have this affliction?
The dopey Which testers probably didn't realise you can turn them off etc.

I thought it was just me, not able to tell the difference on my 50". The one thing I do notice when watching SD and HD, is the rolling interference patterns, when the likes of a woven material is in the picture sometimes (name for the effect?).
BBC has just this week begun transmitting local BBC 1 programs in HD, in this area.

Two of my LG sets have one OS, with a slightly different OS on my slightly older 49" in the living room, but are quite similar...
Press the 'Guide' button and a green screen is displayed for a few seconds, whilst the guide is loaded. Once loaded, I see a small picture of the current channel at the top, left. Along the top is a detail of what is on the channel, it is on, or detail of any channel I highlight from the list below that.
Below is a list of channels in numerical order on the left, with each having a list of what's on now, what follows on after for the next 90 minutes. I can scroll up or down to see other channel numbers. There is no space on the screen, for any ads at all..
I've just checked your current model and it looks like it has Freeview HD. It might be useful to see whether you can tell the difference between the SD and HD versions of the same channel, from your usual seating position. The difference will be exacerbated on a bigger TV.
Also, if you try a new seating position about 15-20% closer to the TV then, according to that chart, it looks like that should roughly mimic the change in size from 48" to 55". If you then try watching an SD Freeview channel and see whether it is still acceptable at that closer distance.

Maybe you're watching it too hard
I've a Pioneer 50 inch plasma and a Panasonic 85 inch plasma, both still going strong 15 years on
Prefer plasma to LCD/LED.. just have to try not to think about the electricity bill

Moire Patterns is the name I was looking for.
I've noticed that effect as well. Also, sometimes rugby and football seem a bit better on HD. But otherwise I'm happy with SD all the time. If I halve the distance to about 6 feet, then I can really notice the grainy effect of SD compared with HD.

Samsung: don't meet the Freeview Play spec / won't pay for testing. So the tuning user experience will be 'different'.
Android TV: on any set is a very cut-down and brand-customised version. So beware what you get / can and can't install.
Catchup and Apps are probably best supplied via streaming stcks/boxes. Much cheaper to replace if/when the TV brand stops support. Panasonic are particularly bad at supporting their products and apps.
48 to 55 inch is negligible size increase IMHO. £500 is a mid to low end budget. Read up on forums like DigitalSpy and AVForums about which TVs do what and how well. https://www.avforums.com/threads/new-my-best-value-tvs-2021-2022-edition.2389508/
Don't discount Phillips TVs in your search.
Hisense own the Toshiba and Hitachi brands (among others) but with some sets still made by Vestel in Turkey.
Ideally view / demo potential sets in John Lewis, Richer Sounds and similar quality sellers once you have a shortlist.
Do let us know what you've short listed and purchase though.

Why not Sony? Bad experiences. I have a non-smart Samsung telly and to get Internet functions onto it I bought a Sony smart DVD player. It was rubbish from the start; it had a limited number of Internet channels and no function to download any more, and as others have said the controls were slow and difficult to use (the fashionable name for this is non-intuitive). After a few months it conked out...went completely dead. With some Googling I found out how to reset it, which brought it back to life, but it kept happening so I took it back for a refund.
A friend bought a Sony smart TV and it had much the same features (or lack of) as the DVD player. She regrets buying it.
I had expected better from Sony, as they used to be just about the top name in audio and other electronic products. Looks like their premium quality and good reputation haven't carried into the digital age.
My Samsung is about the same age and is still perfect, hence my recommending the brand.
I have a JVC smart TV, it was a lot cheaper than the big names so I wasn't expecting too much, but it is fine, I can’t fault it.
