Wales doesn't have the wealth to be worrying about its culture and history. The country's basically bankrupt and needs a future.

Talking to each other in code that nobody else understands is definitely not going to bring Wales a prosperous future. Self-sacrifice in the name of blind patriotic pride.

Lots of countries speak english - not because they're somehow owned by us or less worthy, but because it's a reasonably simple language, lots of others speak it and it's good for business. You could speak a modern language and still be as welsh and proud of your history as you wanted to be, plus you might actually have some businesses wanting to set up there. But it appears the chosen future is claiming the dole and making phlegmy noises at each other, while the rest of the world progresses without you.

I could understand Spanish, French, Portuguese, Mandarin or even German. But Welsh?

I am never sure, at what level is one considered a Welsh speaker, I learn Welsh at school, but lost it as not used.

I have a three year membership for the Llanfair to Welshpool line, so costs me nothing per trip, and my heritage privilege pass means my guest pays half price. Not used either once this year, so not sure if worth it?

But we may call it Llanfair but full name is Llanfair Caereinion, I did look into the Caereinion, seems likely there was a fort of some kind, but the Einion may be the name of the river, or a Welsh prince, so not sure. But down the road we have Castle Caereinion which is not on the side of the river, and seems daft, as says Castle Castle seems an odd mixture of English and Welsh, and all the old mile posts say Pool, not Welshpool. Seems Welsh added latter.

But this duel naming is a problem, I use to live just outside Yr Wyddgrug in a place called Bryn-y-baal, first bit Welsh but last bit druid I think, and no one ever used the Yr Wyddgrug name, it was know as Mold for too long, same with Y Felinheli will always be Port Dinorwic to me.

How many know where Caerdyf is? What is the point in a name when not used.

I agree, learning a second language is very good for the mind, those taught any second language when they're younger will probably be able to pick up other foreign languages easier later on.

The issue is that they're not learning welsh as a second language. Many schools are now teaching other subjects IN welsh, they call it "Welsh-medium" education.

Remember the first time you learnt about algebra in maths, or photosynthesis in biology. It took a bit of understanding. Now imagine that you're being taught it in a foreign language that you only half understand, that doesn't even have words for many modern things.

This is what I mean by Wales crippling itself. Not only can nobody understand them, many of them are missing out on properly learning about other subjects.

Many contributions to this thread confirm the stereotype that the main purpose of Welsh is to privately bitch about the English.

It's very sad to see a country intentionally destroying its future prospects.
