Free school meals

I heard a story on the radio today about free school meals which took me back to my childhood.

I had free schools meals as did many of my peers. I knew that some kids paid for theirs as we had to collect a ticket from a posh kid who also took money from them before giving them a ticket. That kid was perhaps the best dressed kid in the school. He was tall and plump but I can't remember his name.

I do remember the ignominy of having to have free meals.

So I wondered. Do teachers still get the well fed posh kids to hand out meal tickets to the poor kids.

I doubt it's an actual ticket these days it's all done online, parent pay.

I remember the same at school, I had to pay as my Mom and Dad wasn't on any benefits (I think that's the reason).

I also remember when a free dinners mate had a day off one of us payers would have his ticket and spend the quid on sweets

My folks paid for the meals but a number didn't, there wasn't a ticket system but somehow kids 'knew' and it did create a stigma, which is a shame because that's not something a child should have to go through.

I hoped that would be the case as no child should feel ashamed of being in need.

Last year I installed an IT system for school meals, a pre paid fob is the method of payment, topped up on line, I guess anyone getting free meals will have a PIN code or something

Mate of mine used to get free school meals, he was always embarrassed over it, I always felt sorry for him as he was a great lad and as kids we didnt understand how the world works. I bet nowadays with all the unemployment etc, there are more than ever on them so less embarrassing.

I loved school dinners, only thing I liked at school. I wasn't keen on some of them but mainly I ate up everything to keep my stamina up. I was very athletic and so the food was important to me.

Only decent offering at ours was a treacle pud.
I had all kinds o' time for one of those beauties.

As young kids i think it was the majority of us that got free school dinners . yep used to be a weekly ticket . It must have been a different colour as we all knew who was on the free ones .
But back then we got an hour and a half for lunchtime so a lot of the time you just went home .

Not in the 25 years I was a school head- it was long gone. Nowadays kids have an 'account' on the system, which their parents 'recharge'. That means it is easy to anonymise the ones on FSM.

We were as poor as píss (divorced parents single mom) as school kids, so FSM ticket for us.

My own sprogs want for nowt.
