Climate Change

I wonder if computer graphics has got more sophisticated since 2009

I think the point he was making is not that they are using colours now, but that the colours they are using are alarmist. But if you read my edited post just above yours, it seems he has fallen victim to a social media hoax.

They say doctored but do not say in what way.

It looks like somebody has photoshopped it by turning the colour and contrast up. I will try to find a similar map with the correct colours for comparison.

On the wider point, I can see it might be an issue for some, because the colour red is also used for danger as well as temperature.

These are the actual colours. They still look pretty red. But quite a bit less dramatic.

Also, the blue for the sea is completely different:

You just cannot trust the debunkers - they say its doctored but dont say in what way - leading people to think its totally fake when all it is is darker over all. Quite easy to do -- here I have lightened the offending one to match the lighter sea colour of the one on the left and the image is still portraying what the comparison is all about - dooming

"The colour scale was designed for accessibility reasons – for colour blind people like me, it’s easier to distinguish different colours when there is a gradient from light to dark instead of just changes in hue,” Mr McGivern said, adding that the colours had not been altered to instil fear.

"Since the darker reds correspond to temperatures in excess of the UK temperature record [38.7C in Cambridge in 2019], they were only ever intended for the hottest parts of the world,” he continued.

"I never imagined I’d end up seeing them in the UK. The doctored image has those darker reds on it but with much lower temperatures written on the map, which is why it looks like the image was faked."

It might be more useful to comment on the one I posted above which is actually from the Met Office themselves. What do you think of the colours they are using for those temperatures in the South East. They still look quite dramatic to me.

where did you get the image from?

Met Office forecaster debunks ‘doctored’ weather map comparison

Viral post on social media with faked image claims new Met Office graphics are designed to cause fear

This is the original forecast for the hottest day ever. On the fake one, the temperature numbers are all wrong and the way they have done Scotland and Ireland is just a joke:

That one is even scarier than the so called fake one. Sort of makes the scaremongering point on its own

Possibly. The temperatures are actually seven degrees hotter than the fake one. But it does look a bit OTT. Then again, the heat that day was actually dangerous for many groups of people, so maybe an alert was desirable. Our gardener came right at the peak. I told him to give it a miss, but he said he liked it!

I wonder how they show it in a hot country like the USA or Australia. I will have to have a look at some point.

I bet you check under the bed every night in case there’s communists hiding under there.

Now do the RAF base one, tell me that heat islands are not a thing

I would be interested to hear what the Met Office have to say about that. Are we sure the exact location shown on the sceptics websites is correct. If it is a potential problem, there seems to be plenty of green areas they could have used instead on the base.
