I have a couple in my garden and want to swap one for a smart WiFi socket.

Do the Masterseal enclosures have a completely standard housing, or are they custom for MK Logic Plus socket range?

Thanks

They are MK specific, unlikely any other socket would fit into the enclosure, assuming you can even remove the one that's in there.

If you want remote control, fit a Shelly1 or similar in it.

It appears that, for whatever reason, one can buy 'empty' Masterseal enclosures- so presumably nothing to remove. However, goodness knows what (if anything) would fit into them!

Any of the MK Logic Plus accessories of the correct size (single or double sized plates), I expect. About the only variables would be socket, or RCD socket!

Due to the curve at the top of the MK Logic Plus, nothing else would fit perfectly. But I don't suppose it would matter if something fitted loosly, due to a deeper curve at the top, as the water rated rubber seals sit beyond the socket. A completely flat faced socket would fail to fit, and I'd guess any WiFi device would be too deep for the box anyway.

For price reasons, I used Hager outdoor sockets most recently, and the quality is equal or better than MK, I think.

Thanks for the replies. Is this likely to be a compatibility thing across all manufacturers? Found this https://www.screwfix.com/p/contactu...r-1-gang-enclosure-170mm-x-86mm-x-155mm/271rr which I could pair with a single smart socket.

I can use the current MK one elsewhere.

Yes fairly likely, for a perfect fit.

If Contactum do a smart socket, that would probably be fine. Also need to be sure your WiFi will work where the socket is outside, and that your router is transmitting at 2.4GHz

Yeah I have a wired outdoor access point so no problem there!

I have a follow up question: are the actual sockets themselves that come bundled with these IP66 enclosures specific variants for outdoor use? Or in the MK case are they just a normal ("internal") Logic Plus socket pre-mounted in the outdoor-proof enclosure?

I've queried with Varilight about their vPro Smart WiFi range (I'd prefer these as I already have their WiFi dimmers, and in turn the associated app and I'd rather not have accounts with multiple apps if I can avoid it). They came back and said the warranty would be void because they're "intended for indoor use only".

But isn't it the enclosure that provides outdoor-proofability, rather than a specifically designed socket?

Thanks.

Both can be true. It will work fine outdoors, protected from the weather. And they would void your warranty if they knew it was used in those conditions and it broke. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

Thanks. Yeah it was more a "learning" question really than anything else.

I would say they are just normal sockets; they certainly look like it.

After all, how could a socket be weatherproof?

They are by design just holes for putting plug pins in to touch metal bits and bare terminals for exposed wiring.

Just standard sockets - I got a good deal on an MK un-switched double IP66 one, and just replaced the inner socket with a switched version from my stock.

how easy/tricky was that? The MK MS Plus range have the sockets riveted (or similar) on.

Mine was Logic Plus, and it was a few years back! It wasn’t riveted, but I cannot remember how it was fixed now.

Easy, the plastic lug with the metal discs hold them in, release the top two and the socket falls out, theres three ways either
1, totaly remove the top two discs which is hard as the teeth bite in,
2, bend the metal lips up one side then bend down again after or
3, my favourite lean the plastic poles gently outwards with a screwdriver socket clips out,
As above only do two top lugs after push back down, a small nut socket or similar slips over the post and pushes them down nicely.
push the screw hole caps out from the rear and pop into the new outlet, these may not fit an alternative brand
