I have 2 dogs & I was buying a large bag of Winalot dog food in Tesco and was
standing in the queue at the till. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog..
On impulse, I told her that no, I was starting The Winalot Diet again,
although I probably shouldn't because I'd ended up in the hospital
last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive
care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and the way that it works
is to load your trouser pockets with Winalot nuggets and simply eat one or
two every time you feel hungry & that the food is nutritionally complete so
I was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the queue was by now
enthralled with my story, particularly a guy who was behind her.

Horrified, she asked if I'd ended up in the hospital in that condition
because I had been poisoned. I told her no, it was because I'd been sitting
in the road licking my balls and a car hit me…..

The Carnivore diet came up and I said it's a load of nonsense, essentially a manosphere version of the grapefruit diet.

For those that aren't familiar the carnivore diet involves cutting out all carbs and fruits/veg. Similar to the Atkins diet but more extreme. It got pushed by Joe Rogan who tried it for a while and then quit, because that's how fad diets work.

There is a lot that isn't understood about nutrition and going carnivore fully is different enough that i wouldn't assume dieticians will be able to give a definitive rebuttal of it as its not been thoroughly researched. The BHF article says "overall scientific research on its long-term health benefits is limited and inconclusive." Jordon Peterson (I'm no fan) did it for a long time and was having comprehensive tests, found he wasn't lacking anything in terms of vitamins despite not having supplements or any of the food which usually give it.

We can get sugar from converting fat in a much more controlled and healthy way than from carbs.

I think the main thing to consider is that common food these days might be even more harmful than going without and they are better off cutting out all the processed rubbish even if that means missing out on some things. I think thats where this carnivore idea came from. So many people are harmed by food. I think people who have mystery chronic health problems would be wise to cut everything out other than organic meat for a couple of months to let their body clear the crap and then reintroduce things gradually to see what does what. They'll probably find they never want to eat processed food again. Seed oils particularly bad and thats in nearly everything processed. If they react strongly but keep eating it they'll find they can get sort of used to the crap again as our bodies are amazing at tolerating rubbish. Thats the position most people are in full time these days, just about tolerating eating crap

He's way out there on medical stuff. He went off to Russia to try to come off prescription meds and ended up in a coma in ICU for a month. Listening to him on healthcare is like asking the CEO of OceanGate for destination tourism suggestions.

I haven't followed him long term on it but a few things he found just showed we don't know so much on this. I wouldn't expect it to be good long term. What I found myself is I'm much healthier and fitter when I'm running on fat than on carbs. 10 year younger. No blood sugar spikes from carbs, just a steady supply of blood sugar from fat. When we cut out carbs completely for a few weeks we switch to expecting to get sugar from fat but after that i can eat some carbs, as long as i don't live on plates of chips or pasta i stay healthy.

Cutting out carbs takes nearly all the processed food off the menu which is probably most of the reason its a win.

Processing is good for food, raw milk kills. Beer is quite nice.

The reason people feel better on these diets is they reduce calories and cut out junk food. It's the same with all fad diets, they work as long as you follow the insanely strict rules and when you fall off the unrealistic plan it's your fault that you put all the weight back on again.

yeah processed food, or hyper processed as people are calling it no. Nearly everything in a packet is full of cheap carbs and cheap seed oils. And fake sugars.

I lost 20kg well over a year ago and, who knew, it was the pizzas. I just don't eat bread and potatoes and haven't put the weight back on. Trouble is root veg and wheat are the staple foods in the UK so it will never be official guidance to cut them out. Now the eco lies are about cow fats and wanting to push people onto processed food presumably as there is more profit in making it and then the same investors will profit from the pharmaceutical industry. I was getting chronic acid reflux, hypertension, couldn't get to sleep at nights and very likely would have ended up with type 2 diabetes if i'd kept eating the crap. All sorted now. I'm a walking disaster for the pharmaceutical industry.

'Ultra processed food' is a desperate attempt to define a set of rules that meet your preconceptions and pretend it's a law of nature. It adds nothing that saying junk food doesn't already cover.

You are the fad, not the diet.
