Unfortunately it's not the same as it is now time limited...

Thus should you become ill and go over the three month stay out of every six months in an EU/EEA country it does not cover you...

Surely, if you become ill/accident etc, near to the time limited 90 days, and there is a likelihood of you going over your allowed 90 days, the travel insurance would be obliged to repatriate you.
If you are a dual national, and a national of the country, the 90 days limit would not apply, surely?

Isn't this due to the Schengen restrictions for 3rd countries? - if you are an EU citizen it shouldn't apply.

Hmm. 17 posts and I can only see 5 of them so I’d hazard a guess that..... like it did over EHIC cards with the same lies. To summarise the EHIC/GHIC rules:
1. THEY ARE AND NEVER HAVE BEEN A SUBSTITUTE FOR PRIVATE TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE AND BOTH EHIC AND GHIC STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO GET PRIVATE COVER.
2. They will cover any existing illnesses/conditions in a state hospital but only necessary health care and on the same basis as a resident of that EU country will get.
3. This means that you may have to pay something towards your treatment, you may have to travel a long distance to find a state run hospital that can cater for you or they may not even be able to treat your conditions.
4. They will not cover repatriation to your home country.
5. They will not cover mountain rescue so no real use for ski-ing/hiking holidays in the mountains.
6. They will not cover you if you are on a cruise.
7. Even if you don't have an EHIC or GHIC but need to travel, you will still be covered under the scheme so long as you're entitled to a card.

In summary, very little, if any, change from the EHIC and still nowhere as useful as proper travel insurance.

Nope...

Most EU/EEA countries require a dual national to be in the country for 6 months before being allowed back into their health care systems...

Believe me, we know about this first hand!

Just an update on this GHIC malarkey. My mate has been out at his place in Sardinia for the last week and a half. He woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible pain in the stomach which he thought was down to a large meal plus finishing off what his wife left plus a bottle of wine. It got so bad that it necessitated a trip to the local hospital in Bosa. Turned out he had Biliary gall stones and he said it was the worst pain he had ever experienced. The hospital asked for his GHIC card, they took the details, checked them and treated him. He didn’t even need to use his travel insurance but he may have been lucky as that state hospital was quite near to where his Villa is near Modolo. I suppose if he had been in another part of the island he may have had to find a private hospital. He's back home now and on the mend.

In summary, the GHIC did what it said on the tin and was no worse than the old EHIC.

As per the old EHIC, it’s next to useless and you cant beat proper travel insurance. If it gets as much use as the old EHIC, it’ll still come in very handy though - for when I leave the hotel room or cabin and need to take my key card but still want the electrics on to charge up the iPads.

Now, 'who' was it on 'here' that 'kept' banging on about us all 'losing' our EHICs when we 'left' the EU? Oh, yeah, Lally and 'part' of their 'project fear' wasn’t it? Looks like they 'were' wrong 'as usual'!

Just applied for a new one as the old ones are expiring in 3 days time and we are probably doing a motoring trip through France in July. Still not a substitute for proper holiday trip medical insurance with private treatment and repatriation etc but may come in handy. Never needed to use the old one. So easy to get, less than a minute to apply for new ones for me and Mrs Mottie and to think, some said health cover in the EU would be lost after Brexit….
