In any case, who the heck goes on holiday or travels to the EU and just relies on an EHIC/GHIC? Only an unintelligent person, that’s who. EHIC/GHIC only covers emergency medical cover in a state hospital whereas a proper travel insurance covers private and state medical care, repatriation, missed departures, loss of luggage, theft and a whole lot more.

There are some slight differences, e.g. UK students studying in EU, and some people in Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein with residency rights.
The EHIC was for EU only,whereas the GHIC covers for some other countries.

Pre Brexit, UK residents could bypass queues in UK by going to an EU country with a pre existing ailment to receive medical care.
They didn't need to be referred to a specialist by a doctor, they could simply consult a specialist in the EU, directly.

An EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) covered medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during temporary visits to EU countries, Switzerland, and the EEA. It ensured you received state treatment under the same conditions and costs as local residents (which is often free).
What it Covered:

• Emergency treatment and visits to A&E
• Treatment for pre-existing medical conditions
• Routine maternity care (as long as the trip wasn't explicitly to give birth)
• Ongoing treatments like kidney dialysis or oxygen therapy (must be pre-arranged)
