One person being released because the CPS decided that there was insufficient evidence to achieve a guilty verdict, does not negate the violent actions of the other thugs:

A total of 22 people have been charged in connection with the incident, which initially saw crowds demonstrating outside the city centre police station, before gathering close to the Digwa family home.
It brings the total to 13 men jailed over the disorder last week during which 12 police officers and a police dog were injured.
The court heard previously the disorder had cost police £443,000 for staffing and accommodation, while Southampton City Council had paid £6,700 in clean-up costs.

If they didn't think they had a case then why drag him to court? Sounds like they were hoping that they could scare him into pleading guilty while there was no case.

He's been in prison for 2 weeks, they didn't even give him bail. I can't see any justification at all for this, other than political control of anti-government protestors. But in his case he wasn't even protesting, he was just there.

I hope he now sues.

It's the CPS decision to prosecute, ot not.
There was a case, but his not guilty plea meant a jury would decide, and the CPS decided that they insufficient evidence to convince the jury.

He's been in prison for 2 weeks, they didn't even give him bail.

That would have been up to a court to decide, not the police.

I can't see any justification at all for this, other than political control of anti-government protestors.

Of course you can't. There's lots of things that you can't see any justification for, and there's lots of thing that you imagine without justification.

But in his case he wasn't even protesting, he was just there.

How do you know he wasn't protesting? Any evidence to support your assertion?

I hope he now sues.

Then I suspect the onus would be on him to prove that "he was just there".
The police might have some evidence but insufficient to convince a jury.

Even if he was protesting, was that not his right to do so?

Given that we imprison non-violent environmental protestors for several years, maybe the police were keen to fight the constant accusations of 2-tier policing.
