Tides are primarily caused by the moon and the sun. They do not change year to year. They also move mostly left to right (flood) and right to left (ebb) in the channel. They only briefly head south on the turn.

At the shortest point the crossing is approx 18 Nm at the preferred crossing point it’s around 22 Nm.

At an avg SoG of 4-5kts we have a crossing time of 5~6 hours. Assuming you were completely clueless and picked the worse possible time to cross your crossing would be impacted by 1-2 hours.

There are no scenarios where we have a “bad” tide year or a “good” tide year which might impact the numbers.

Weather conditions significantly affect tides by altering both the height and timing of the water levels. While gravitational forces govern regular tides, atmospheric pressure and wind can cause actual water levels to differ notably from standard astronomical predictions.

Migration and illegal migration are different things.

Providing a service to assist illegal small boats, encourages them to come. The people smugglers know they will be helped and often don't even put enough fuel in the boat for the journey. If support was exclusively left to boarder force finding a "skipper" would be harder, given the likelihood he would be identified for prosecution.

We should just wait at the UK coastline - man it with volunteers if necessary and arrest them on landing and escort them to secure facilities with basic aminities where they will stay until their asylum request has been processed and if we can not ascertain their identity to find out if they are a potential threat to the UK public then in the detention centre is where they will stay until they decide to tell us who they really are and where they are from and they want to go back to their wife’s and families they left behind. Then its on a plane and off they go.

Well you seem to be under the impression that wind and tides are the same, at the same time each year. We all know, and so do the National Ocean Service that to not be true. And it was Filly that showed his book. If that book suggests that tides, weather and currents are always the same at the same time each year, I would suggest the title of the book is incorrect. It should have been entitled "Sailing, by Dummies".

Weather can temporarily negate or completely overwhelm the effect of the tide. Through a phenomenon called a storm surge, strong winds and changes in atmospheric pressure can push or pull large volumes of water, altering sea levels by a meter or more and completely masking the usual rise and fall of the tide.

And of course currents are affected by tides and weather conditions.

Currents in the English Channel (and channels in general) are never always the same. They constantly change in speed, direction, and strength based on complex tidal cycles, the shape of the coastline, and local weather conditions.

They, along with the border force are a contributing factor for illegal migration and asylum seekers. They are Enablers. Nobody, and I do mean nobody, in the small boat arrival figures have made it to our shores in a small boat for bloody years. They absolutely know they don’t need to. They only need to make it to around the halfway mark so let’s not pretend otherwise. If a lorry driver gave asylum seekers the same assistance as the French police, the RNLI and the border force do, they’d be fined £10k per asylum seeker.
