Just wondering what peoples thoughts were on interpreting the regs following issues :-
(1) capping / oval 'conduit' used to protect cables in domestic situations prior to plastering . Required by regs?

(2) Positioning of new c/u for access at a height of 1200mm.

Lets just say these two issues were a topic of debate on a recent job!!

for me i do not believe this capping is needed under 17th edition installations and i will be continuing to 'hang' my c/u's at height of 1200mm.

Capping - not a requirement in 17th Edition but is good practice to stop plaster snagging your hard work.

I have been told that, probably, 3mm steel capping earthed is sufficient for non - RCD protection, but this is not explicit in the regs.

The mechanical protection must be steel to not require the use of RCD, but who in their right mind would not want RCD protection in their house

CU fall into the 450mm to 1200mm boundaries (which only apply to new build and full refurb).

Doing my 17th ED. in 12 days time

It wouldn't comply as I'm pretty sure I could hammer a nail through 3mm metal capping so wouldn't meet 522.6.6 (iv).

See 522.6.6 and 522.6.7

No, I would be impressed if you could direct me to 3mm thick STEEL cable capping! :D I would be genuinely surprised if it existed.
There would also be the problem of making the earthed connection to the capping.

In fact, I shouldn't have put '3mm' in my original post. It was more a statement of metal capping being non compliant.

Anyway, as per your picture...no problem...aim for the hole ;)
