Save Southern Electric museum of Electricity

The museum of electricity in Christchurch, Dorset, is set to close indefinitely because it apparently "does not fulfil its visitor needs and has restricted disabled access". It was operated and funded by SSE, offering free admission to an excellent attraction outlining the history of...

Help! Do I have major problems?

I don't know if there's anything wrong with your electrics because I haven't seen your electrics. Just because someone has told you you need a new consumer unit doesn't automatically mean he's out to rip you off, despite what Matt Alright BBC rogue traders might tell you.

    Extension cable fixed to wall?

It's not so much a question of whether or not you can identify a "fixed extension", more "what IS a "fixed extension""? Is it an appliance because it has a plug on it, or part of the fixed wiring because it is permanently fixed to the fabric of the building? You're obviously going to do it...

    Top marks for ingenuity.....I guess

Ah, the old "fixed extension". //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=250699

    Extension cable fixed to wall?

Because it is the kind of thing an amateur would do. Often found in pubs, where a plug has a flex (or worse, t&e, which isn't allowed) which just seems to disappear off somewhere, possibly to a socket which powers a television. This means it can't easily be tested, plus as already mentioned...

    Extension cable fixed to wall?

I think what you're proposing sounds awful - it's not quite a fixed installation and not quite an extension lead, which just screams out "amateur". Ideally you should get extra sockets added professionally, otherwise if possible drive a couple of screws into the back of the desks to hold...

Are Sky trying to defraud us? Telephone query

Large companies such as Sky often break the law by deliberately trying to defraud people. You should phone the call centre and demand to speak to Rupert Murdoch immediately. But seriously though, it could be something else on the line which is at fault in which case they are well within...

URGENT - Dimmer switch wiring help!

It doesn't matter as long as you get the right two together, otherwise the dimmer will try to dim the lights in another room and you may end up frying the new dimmer. Saying that though I agree with BAS in that you shouldn't be messing about with electricity if you haven't got a clue -...

    Still Not Managed 100%....

AFAIK the definition has always been the same - some people think you should test every appliance, others have theories about only needing to test 'portable' appliances because it's called 'PORTABLE appliance testing', or getting around testing items by connecting them via FCUs.

    outside wall light bulb position?

I always thought it was the other way around - the connections went at the top; something to do with the way heat circulates around the bulb, but also if the filament breaks it will fall into the glass bulb and not back onto the electrical part, meaning the breaker is less likely to trip...

Weird lights in bathroom! Bulbs gone! Nightmare to find.

10,000 hours is the average time they last, not a cast iron guarantee. Chances are you turn the bathroom lights on and off more than the kitchen lights.

    plug socket

I wouldn't do it that way - even if you fitted a cooker control unit (ccu) which didn't actually say "cooker" on it I would consider it misleading because that type of outlet is intended for a cooker. As already mentioned the best way would be to fit a switch next to a socket, possibly in a...

    Electricians "guiding" DIY installation work

I don't know any sparks that like testing work done by other sparks who work for the same company, never mind work done by a DIYer who had to ask how to make it work on public forum while they were "away on holiday".

Cable Size to Log Cabin Studio

Personally I would use 3 core SWA because it will have a lower EFLI which would be better for the computer. Some electricians just convert systems to TT for every outbuilding, which isn't necessary unless you need main bonding.
