I think the Spanish flu was famous for killing mainly the 20 to 40 year olds.

In 1918, British male life expectancy was 55, American male life expectancy was about 50. In less developed parts of the world it was only 30 years.

So you cannot compare to today's populations - over 40's were not immune to Spanish Flu, they were mostly already dead.

And how long did it take to eradicate Small Pox?
That's why I've been saying that I think it's false doctrine to place such reliance on the vaccine.
The other measures (lockdowns, social distancing, masks, etc) are more effective, quicker and more reliable than reliance on the vaccine.

Once herd immunity is achieved by vaccine, (if it does) how will it be kept at bay?
Track and trace, which has been abandoned?
Ridiculous entrance restrictions?
The point with lockdowns, social distancing and masks is that none of them are medium or long term solutions. The only long term solutions are tolerance, herd immunity or eradication. Tolerance seems to be generally unpalatable, herd immunity requires tolerance or the vaccine, eradication is unrealistic.

There are plenty of diseases we keep at bay with a vaccine. TB, measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, polio, flu, etc etc. Why should covid be any different?

I disagree, if the measures are restrictive and strict enough the pandemic can be beaten in a matter of weeks or months. As it has been in other countries.

But the point is how long did it take to keep at bay, those diseases with a vaccine?
They were by and large (with the exception of flu which requires an annual vaccine), diseases not viruses, which we know, mutate.
Can we, will we be sufficiently patient to persist with the other partly applied measures until eventually the vaccine does its job?
And is it a guarantee that the vaccine will keep the virus at bay?

Do you believe in fairies too as well as the anti vax anti covid crap you suk up from idiots...""The world scientific community""...bunch of charlatans in your head.shows how far deranged you are..

Your faith in the 'experts' is misplaced because for every epidemiologist, etc that agrees with the government's 'experts', there is another one who doesn't.

These government scientific 'experts' lose all credibility with their over exaggerated forecasts, concocted to sell the most fear. Typical example was when they forecast 4,000 deaths per day last year which was wide of the mark and they were told to stop using wrong and outdated data. But carry on being gullible and remain in blissful ignorance.

Care to tell us what the healthcare system was like back then?

Or the population level?

It was not like for like!

You're right. Population was much lower. Spanish flu killed about 50 million people. World population was about 1,800,000,000 (estimate), and it infected about 1 in 3 people, so around
50,000,000 of 600,000,000 died, or

So today ... we'd expect around 580,000,000 people to die.

While the UK did not have a government enforced lockdown, many other countries did. And people were wearing masks and generally not going out and mingling.

But it is generally thought that a lack of government planning was the cause of so many deaths. As I said, we really should try to learn from history.

One thing we really don't know about coronavirus is, how many people would be dead if the world did not go into lockdown? Almost 100,000 Brits are dead after less than a year, with no lockdown, that could easily be 10 times more.

Bet you believed the government's 'experts' forecasts of 4,000 deaths per day

1800 deaths recorded yesterday with lockdown in place

It doesn't take a genius to release that if there was no lockdown, more would die. 4000 might have been an underestimate with this current variation

Forecasts based on normality, not with lockdown, isolation, school closures, masks etc.

Boris is passing on NHS guidance. So in your head, the whole of the NHS is a bunch of lieing Charlatans...I am just going to step out the car a minute and have a fuķin belly laff at your stupidity.

Jeez. The drivel you write. Yes, nurses, cleaners, radiologists, physiotherapists, receptionists, GPs, healthcare assistants, midwives, ENT specialists, porters, osteopaths - all lying charlatans.

It is the government to blame, and Bojo is the head of the government.
This government has invoked some nonsensical policies.
If you arrive in UK without a vaccine certificate you are fined £500.
I heard that 35 people arrived at Heathrow yesterday without a vaccination certificate. Sure enough, they were fined £500, and then allowed to disperse into the general population.

Well if I thought, bu99er, I have no vaccination cert, and no time to get one, (or even worse, have a positive cert', so deny the existence of any), I'm faced with a hotel bill of about £1,000 for a two week isolation (and that's dead cheap at London prices), or £500 fine. It's a no-brainer.

Australasian countries would isolate you in government provided accommodation for the same infringement.

you took 1 bit of my post and ignored the examples of idiots i gave, i suppose its just easier to blame the government.

as i said there has been errors made, but the biggest issue is the public in keeping it spreading.

i also agree with other sentiments that the borders should have been locked with proper protocols in place.

Angola for instance insist on a covid negative cert before your departure, no certificate you don't get on the plane. Once you get into the country, they take your passport and the hotel keeps you in your room for 10 days. After this you are free to go and get your passport and roam the country. As far as i'm aware this has largely worked, with only 19000 cases to date and 444 deaths to date.

Australia and new zealand seem to be pretty on top of it aswell.

Ah, that is the unprovable get-out clause - if you accept those numbers.

1800 deaths recorded yesterday with lockdown in place

Unless, of course -

if so-called lockdown, with the miriad of unavoidable exceptions, doesn't work.

And no seasonal flu deaths??

Sorry, you were disputing the idea of 4000 people dying in a day, why change to subject now?

Obviously seasonal flu deaths are down. The people most likely to catch and then die have been vaccinated and have been in isolation for 10 months. How would they catch it?

if so-called lockdown, with the miriad of unavoidable exceptions, doesn't work.

Well, you are free to believe that. But explain this - why have death rate been lower in countries with more severe lockdowns?

(I bet you chose to ignore that question)
