Just going to say that the contracts for leaky ships and the design specs were actually done under labour government .... The Tories inherited this, and it seems from what I can find the specs of the vessels stayed almost as per the original.
Was it in the spec that the ship should leak?

How common is it for new ships to leak?

What are sea trials for if theres never a chance that snags are found?

Never said any of that.

The whole point of sea trials is that snags are found. These QE had 6 months of sea trials, started in June 2017 and commissioned December 2017. It was put into service 2020

New ships are rather common for failures of various types, you need to understand that the systems required these days are rather complex.

From what I understand the latest leaks were caused by a burst fire main, but all the leaks thus far have been something to do with the sprinkler system. So either their was a design spec issue or a part failure that was at work, as there has been so many failures on a particular system it appears to be a specification issue as opposed to poor workmanship.

One of the biggest issues is that as the ships are so complex, when a failure occurs it has the potential to destroy hundreds of not thousands of miles of cable within the ship depending on the severity of the leak, not to mention the equipment it takes out with it, which is one of the reason it costs so much and takes so long to repair them

One of the faults was a leaking propeller shaft, this was a component failure and was found during the sea trials which would be expected.

I'm not sure whether the fault lies in the fact 3 companies, bae, Thales and Babcock were trying to build the ship together, maybe each had a seperate part to design and build I don't know.

Anyway, my point was that this isn't a Tory issue at all as it is being portrayed. It's very much a labour legacy issue.

If ships didn't leak, they wouldn't need bilge pumps. I believe all ships have them, even my humble yachts had them.

Yes, they would leak from the prop seals generally, but also other minor leaks, engines, vessel water system Or from waves crashing over the bow etc

But they shouldn't really leak at all, bilge pumps are mandatory in certain sizes of vessels as bilge pumps are generally for safety at sea incase there is incidental water ingress.

Or in my case, poor aim at the toilet after a few too many brandys.(y)

OK.

So why did you just want to say this:

?

Because John d stated it was the conservatives that caused all the issues with these vessels.

But the facts are that the design and contracts were signed sealed and delivered 2 years before the conservatives came to power, and they did not make any changes to the building not the ships other than making the contractors take 50% of the overspend costs as it was the contractors causing further delays on top of the delays implemented by the labour government deciding to slow the build down due to the state of the economy, which is the opposite to what should have happened as doing so added 1.6 billion to the cost of the ships.

In layman's terms the boats leaking is not the fault of the government as portrayed in another members posts

Of course you could choose a tried and tested engine that works in warm climates rather than an untested one...

And then spend years and hundreds of millions of pounds actually getting a destroyer to work effectively in the main conflict areas instead of being a money maker for 'tugs 'r' us'!

Show me the word "conservatives,"

that must expain why German industry has fallen so far behind the quality and productivity levels of Britain.

Ooooops, my mistake.

I got that the wrong way round.

£3bn Royal Navy aircraft carrier springs a leak for the third time this year
Engine room aboard the warship was flooded during the incident

17:00, 7 DEC 2020

The Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales is undergoing repairs after suffering its third leak this year.

An engine room aboard the £3billion warship was flooded during the incident while alongside at Portsmouth Naval Base.

It has been reported that the leak has forced the ship to postpone a trip to the US to exercise with F35B Lightning jets.

"The navy’s flagship £3.2 billion aircraft carrier sprang a leak weeks before it was due to set off on its maiden world voyage.

A pipe in the HMS Queen Elizabeth, known as “Big Lizzie”, ruptured, allowing salt water to flow into the vessel while it was sailing from Portsmouth to Scotland in March."
