Discovered this wiring issue in my GF's house which she currently rents from a private landlord.

Is it safe to have the live wire joined like this? Presumably the landlord upgraded the CU and didn't want to pay for a full rewire?

Nothing wrong with that as long as the test results were good......and why would he need a rewire just because the existing cables were a bit short?

German nitpickers would check if the crimps are rated for solid or coarse stranded wire (they’re probably not) but in practice they’re fine.

Can you tell I‘ve spent too much time with German web sparks?

The trouble with those crimps is that people don't always fit them properly, often because they don't use the correct tool, and the wires can therefore pull out very easily.

It must be my eyesight but those connections, (extensions), from the crimps look suspiciously like bare copper!
Please tell me it's my eyesight at fault!

I thought that at first, but I am sure it is brown insulation reflecting the light from the flash
