Story goes, strange drumming noise from our boiler or Boilermate. So I got The MK Group to come out who advertise that they are Gledhill specialists. Chap said the Boilermate is OK and noise is the fan in the boiler.

I then got a local boiler guy to come out and he replaced the fan, that's £270 please but the boiler is still noisy as your heat exchanger is scaled up.

So I'm over £300 down and still have a small helicopter landing when the boiler fires up.

I've been told not to Fernox the Gledhill. The boiler guy said he could try adding Fernox to just the boiler by draining system, cutting the pipes to the boiler and adding the Fernox, leave then drain or he could just replace the heat exchanger.

Advice appreciated as I've spent £££'s and got nowhere.

why did he replace the fan if there was nothing wrong with it?

Why didn't you get the original Company to replace the fan, BIG mistake getting to many companies involved if the original had replaced the fan you could have refused to pay as the diagnosis was incorrect the way you have gone about it you have paid for a diagnosis from Company A), then YOU have instructed Company B) to replace the fan thewy can't be held liable as they were simply following your specific instructions sounds like you are your own worst enemy

First company said they only really work on Gledhill's and don't do boilers but were adamant it was the fan.

Thats a very sorry tale then, & I sympathise, you should be able to find a Heating Service Comapny that does boilers and boilermates we do although I am not a boilermate fan

In my view it wasn't a waste of money changing the fan, as the guy said the bearings were going it would have caused a breakdown. It is like a car which needs new radiator hoses you pay for it done before it is a catastrophy or you break down at 5pm on the M1 your choice.

Further more when a fan blows or a pump on anything connected to a Gledhille it usually takes out the Gledhill pcb which costs us £120 plus vat or so, then we have to make a living. So your bill would quite likely have escalated into rediculous proportions had you waited for the catastrophy to occur at a time most likely unfriendly to your plans.

As for the scaled up heat exchanger, is it worse than it was before? worse than all the other identical installations on the estate? If yes, a lot worse? or are we being finicity? if not then get it descaled stand alone as your excellent recent plumber suggested.

Or ask him for a quote to replace the lot with a storage combi or similar.

and then don't come on here saying "my plumber said I needed a new boiler have I been conned?"

If you want to be the expert carry on, if you don't find someone who is known to be excellent by local knowledge and TRUST their judgement.

Me I would take the lot out! and put the fan on ebay.

You would take out a perfectly good and operating system because the boiler needs descaling? Mathewg was on about plumbers who rip off. I think he has a point in general so is weary of them.

Although in this case the fan may have needed changing.

Everyone here says the Broag boiler is quiet, maybe he should buy one of those. :)

Its option to take the lot out as the boiler is pushing 12 years old, so perhaps its time. If so what do you guys suggest.

Its a 4 bed detached house 13 rads and a Boilermate 2 and I'd like to be a quiet as possible as our room is above the boiler!

Paul, I'm not having a go at my plumber, I think his work is fine. I suppose I'm having a go a my own judgement. Just frustrating that I've spent £300 and yes I have a new fan and the Gledhill has been checked but its just still so noisy!

Don't worry you are not alone.

As said if it were mine I'd take it out to protect myself from future bills.

just be careful what you pick next. I don't recommend any more, but loads of the guys on here do.

Now the way I read this is that you called MK and they diagnosed the fault. But you did not pay them or get them to replace the fan.

Now some on this site are calling some in our trade rip off merchants. There are some but only a very few.

Based on what you have said above, it seems that you ripped off MK Services by getting them to come and diagnose the fault for free !!!

Wrong. I paid MK £65. They told me the Gledhill Boilermate II is fine and it was the fan in the Potteron Suprima but they don't repair boilers. Fan changed by local plumber and no difference as far as I can tell.

I also never said I was ripped off, you wrote that. All I have said is a part has been changed, I've spent £300 (more like £340, MK visit + fan) and I'm no further forward with getting it fixed.
