We didn't know it at the time, but we were later told by the Ukrainians that we were being ambushed by a saboteur Russian reconnaissance squad. It was professional, the rounds kept smashing into the car - they didn't miss.

It's a risk they run. Some AlJ reporters had a similar experience with Ukrainians but other than shooting one of the reporters mobile phones after knocking it out of his hand they didn't open fire. It seems they were thought to be possible Chechen saboteurs. This is why they are doing a lot of SUS as it's called in the UK, people and vehicles.
