Worse still, see the VW Santana @ 9:15 or the Comodore @ 13:47.
My BIL drove his 2 year old Golf (mk.1) into the back of one of those artics with an AapHanger (self-stowing fork lift truck, about 3 tonnes worth including a massive cast iron weight at the rear) on the back at about 40 mph. The engine submarined, as it should, but the pedal box came upwards, breaking both his legs just above the knees where they hit the back of the steering wheel. The fire brigade had to cut him out. Just shows how cars have got safer in the meantime
Only time I had an airbag deploy it felt like having got in the ring with Mohammed Ali and the peculiar smell and taste of it stayed with me for a week. Possibly saved me from a broken neck, though, so worth it
