Another internet bank scam

D

dextrous

We probably all know the scams got though emails - where you click on the link which brings up a realistic copy of your e-banking logon page.

Here's a more devious one that happened to me yesterday.

Logged onto lloydstsb to do some financial bits n bobs as per normal (typed in the address myself), and got to the accounts page as per usual. Then, suddenly the background dimmed and up popped a highly realistic page over it asking me for additional security details (memorable word etc). Got halfway through typing in my credit card details before smelling a rat - in particular why it was asking for my dob, full card details and csv number. Phoned lloyds who confirmed that this isn't one of their procedures and that it was a spyware/virus that had got onto my pc..

Happy solution is that we blocked the account immediately, ran a virus checker and have removed (hopefully) the offending thingy, and back up and running today with new password.

Beware - these scammers are getting very clever if they can get fraudulent pages up on screen asking for details whilst you have actually legitimately logged on using your address bar.

I always check that I have https in the address bar and check the digital signature of the certificate, if you are asked to put in details again after having already logged in then i'd be suspicious straight away, you did the right thing in ringing the bank up, though it's always possible for them to give you an alternative phone number on their page I suppose?

That's the clever thing - I logged in after typing in the https address myself, and the popup seemed an integral part of the process without having any address bar on it. Used the telephone number on the back of my card to contact lloyds.

What i should have added is that the page you input into should have the https in the address bar and a certificate ie dont type into any window that doesnt, like your popup one.

The answer is not to bank online, at least not with the PC that you surf/download porn with.
