It's a very long time since I went abroad but as my 9 year old has just learnt to swim going somewhere with a pool seems the thing to do. So any tips on...
Websites/companies?
Where to go, and what to do there?
Anything else a novice needs to know?

Go outside of the school holidays, pay a fine if it happens, save £Ks, at that age he'll not miss much. Your question is pretty vague tbh, you must have an idea on the type of holiday, location, close to a beach or not bothered, budget, villa in the middle of nowhere or hotel in the centre of somewhere etc?

Also, where you are in the UK: if you are next to Portsmouth for example, you could easily get the ferry to France, and drive your own car to a EuroCamp.

I would stick to Europe, fairly close and quick to get to.

Like Brig says, method of travel does depend where you live and whether you have a car.

Check places that have a swimming pool also have lifeguards.

When you pick a date to go look at a couple of days either side and if you live close to a few airports check them all out individually as the websites sometimes bring up the dearest option .
These two simple things can save you several hundred quid .
The two big companies are jet2 and tui so check prices against each other . One i done earlier this year the holiday that cost £2700 with Tui the exact same holiday with comparable flight times was 1700 quid dearer with jet 2

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
Apparently my nearest train station goes straight into Gatwick and everyone around here does that.
Definitely just Europe and there's a chance it might be just me and the little boy. A swimming pool he can go in everyday is the main thing but things to do near by like water parks would be good. Cheers

So, just to narrow it down. Somewhere in Europe with a swimming pool?

loads to do here for kids and nice holiday resort in general with nice beach .

I always book a good boarding kennels with a swimming pool etc for myself...

Make absolutely sure you have good holiday insurance (not just a GHIC card !)

Sometimes booking through British Airways can be cheaper by the time you add in extra costs for seat allocation and luggage fees with a budget airline. Better flight times too.
