After a debate on another thread, the point was made about apprentice schemes. We operate the SNIPEF one, what do others use??

Given the large numbers of unemployed kids, as employers, we should address this problem - but it must be the best scheme for the kids & us.

Can I have your views please?

cant beat british gas apprenticeships

With the greatest repect Gazza, a BG apprenticeship will be sadly lacking in any Plumbing skills, minor construction skills, roof leadwork or commercial heating skills....................I've yet to see a CPS flashing a chimney, fitting an ASHP or Under Floor Heating. I have seen plenty of BG accomplished boiler 'parts changers'.

Also, my understanding was that BG were charging £6K to train an apprentice!!!..............Gosh, that doesn't seem fair!!

Delta its 16k they charge if youre over 18, and while what you say is partly true, some isnt, reading your post you seem to have a chip on you're shoulder about BG or most people realy

Why do they need plumbing skills, they can solder, bend pipe, fit condensate (all relevent to their jobs) Why the **** would BG teach them to hang a gutter or fit a bathroom suit, they're neve going to do it

Do not get me started on lead welding and flashing chimneys, thats a roofers job these days, i did that **** in my long arse 5 year apprentaship and guess how many times ive done it since, erm never, tell you how many roofers i see doing it though, hundreds, oh but i did get taught how to make and weld the upstands for Flues and Soil stacks to come through the roof, oh wiat a minute they are alll pre fabbed now, so again not needed

Lets see why dont BG, teach them to use steel pipe, and commercial/ industrial instalation, because they dont ****ing do it, they do domestic only, i also did steel pipe installs, bending, threading etc etc on my long arse apprentaship, never used it since, i dont need 2 , and im not ashamed to say i do domestic nat gas heating, im a qualified plumber also but dont do much plumbing anymore, i dont need to, Most of the long apprentaships are long because you do a load of **** you never use

Oh 1 thing it didnt teach was how to patch walls/ ceilings/ make boxes **** like that learnt all that on the job with my mentor, although i know 4 a fact BG install engineers get taught to plaster and patch and other RELEVENT things which are obviously needed

I went to Salford College mate, full apprentaship even worked a year b4 i started so was round 5 years, and i can say the College has1 boiler to work on, and nowhere near as much money to throw at training as BG, have you ever seen their workshops, so what is it that make Government run colleges so much better, i think nothing, its all down to the length of the course, BG is now 3 years, 3 years specialising in just fixing/ installing boilers, not doing every poss job you may ever need 2 do, so some might say they will be better trained than you or i now,

I take it you still have your putty on the van, for glazing because plumber USED to do that, i think they should also teach them to lead line wooden gutters

Also why does it bother you, if they're more specialised in 1 area, then its less competition 4 bathrooms, gutters, and lead flahing although i think the roofers might nick that 1 off you

Now, now Thomas, I must correct you there; he's a ***** living in a caravan in Whitley Bay and is now my Official Stalker.

I can't say too much at the moment, as there's an Restraining Order lodged with Whitley Bay Council and the local Polis have stated that he's harmless - as he has no teeth and can't bite, but can give you a nasty suck!!!

Thanks Ollie for your valuable input, yes, I agree with a lot of what you are saying. Some of the skills we have learned will never be used.

As the Group CEO, i'm looking to the future & only want the best for my staff, including our current & future apprentices.

I'm sure there's plenty BG employees that are first class at their job, but by it's very nature they don't have a broad skills base for the Plumbing/Heating trade.

Thanks again Ollie for an interesting read.

well i'll try an put this in my best yankee lingo so ya'll savy, kevplumb is no more 'stateside' than roast beef, look at the hours he's postin, (up early for work my buttocks), anyone can read the daily redneck from a puter, he posted yesterday in the afternoon ourtime, so when is he at work,,,never, cos he's a ***** and does like work, so he comes on here and pretends to be a plumber, but now he;s well sussed, just cos you rob copper, it doest make you a plumber son
and thats why he's always angry, :D :D :D :D

Be careful........ a friends son (13) was set on by 4 traveller kids.

Called em ****** during the handbags......police knocked door and warned him he was using offensive racist language and said he would be arrested next time.

Oh coppers not interested in the four who set on him tho.....their word against his

why have you got a bee in your bonet about delta mate? it shows that he can wind u up. my advice is just ignore him because at the moment he is wiping the floor with ya ;)

Tom, I think you've got 'Two Tone' on the end of your line!!
Do you want me to get the Landing Net?? Or are you gonna let him squirm a wee while longer??

Now, back to the apprenticeship schemes.

why would i want to read, or even know what a yankee paper says, i'm not the one pretending to be 'stateside'. but i can check, i have several cyber buddies i can contact on a guitar forum in georgia atlanta. IF I WANTED TO CHECK, but i don't you live in your little world on a travellers site in jeordie land, and i don't care.
i 'm a working plumber like you wanna be :D :D :D :D

Again, it's the British tax payer that's in the wrong. Never seen a ***** at a filling station or in a Legal battle with HMRC!!
