Julie would chop my c*ck off if she knew I was posting this, but I'm just interested...

We are expecting our third (and final!) baby on November 22.

If it is a girl, we have a name sorted. But as we have 2 boys already, she is convinced I cannot make girls, so we are looking for a boy's name.

We have one contender which I will not reveal, as I don't want to influence your choices in any way.

Bearing in mind a surname of Abbott, (ie NO Peters or Christophers!!!), what do you think?

Just to help you further, my two kids are called

William (4) and Matthew (16m).

As an aside, something I did not realise when we chose those names is that Will begins with W ends in M whereas Matt begins in M and ends in W.

Also, both names have a double letter in character positions 3 & 4.

I've always liked Nathan Alexander for a boy, or Carolyn Alexandra for a girl. Not sure how well the middle name goes with Abbot though. (?)

Took 3 reads for the penny to drop... :D

Go on Simon, we dare you..... tell your wife it was our fault ;)

"Pintof" (py-n-tov) should go down well if you live in Greene King country.

How about Hall?

Abbot Hall... geddit?

OK OK I'm fetching me coat.

Well, seeing as an "Abbot" (with a single t) was the superior of a monastery, you could perhaps go along the monk theme... Plenty of good, solid latin names there!

I always find it interesting to go to an old Cathedral, especially York, and read the Anglo Saxon names of bishops and noblemen from about 700AD onwards. At first glance they might seem odd, but you grow to like them. Obviously some might be a little TOO different!

By the time he gets to 18 or 19, having a name that really stands out such as "Aethelred Abbott", will be a good thing. Everyone will know who he is and the name will probably be seen as extra "personality" (although with your history I am sure you will be passing on plenty of that! )

Here is a list of some sturdy 8th century names.

Perhaps Viking names, even better. If he works in an investment bank doing aggressive takeovers, his name will be feared throughout the land... Hallvard Abbott, pillager and investment banker

I will definitely want to give my children names that represent their heritage, all depends on their mother too!

how about richard, when shortened becomes rich/richie.
people forget that when they get to school their names will be shortened.
the bloke who works for me called his son paris & his other one thade as in planet of the apes
that kid will suffer big time @ school.

You could give him a name that busy people do not mis-spell ... This is very important in life ... Most of all ? It is his name to live with forever.

I mean, he may say, "Hey dad, what A Damn name you have given me." ;)
On the other hand he probably would not.

P

Where I work, we used to have a Mr Richard Head listed in the telephone directory, I'm sure it was a p*ss take, but it always made me smile. I cannot even begin to imagine the stick the guy would have got. Back to the question asked however, I can only agree with you that your missus will have your kna*kers if she finds out

@ school (when i attended :) ) there was a lad who's surname was kerrs
& his first name was wayne, seriously.my mum would'nt say why she thought it was a horrible name as i was only young at the time.
