No, I'm not back, but my ID still works, and this is a one-off important post.
Yes, I did say that, but at the time it was completely true - I had no intention, or no idea, of coming back to ask a question.

If it makes you feel better, I hereby reserve the right to return again at some point to ask about generators..

Don't blame me, I've never seen that woman before in my life. No, I don't know how she knows about that scar - maybe she's a witch.

considered the "all in one" types? these only require 2 holes ( well 3 with the drain line.. ) in the wall and have vents on the outside.. no external condenser etc..

can be used for heating and cooling..

more or less idiot proof.. just 2 holes with a core drill and a few rawlplugs..

Must be noisy though. O well , never mind , the OP could always wear ear muffs. :(

I would agree, the best place for the compressor and condenser fan is in the garden.

IMO these types of unit are fine in living areas but are not suitable for bedrooms if you intend to run the unit during the night.

We estimate a bedroom with a 2kw wall mount single split(Daikin) will be around 1.2-1.5k + Vat (which is 5% on these)
For a 2kW split the materials cost alone make you estimate hard to understand (including mains supply) and why is the VAT only at 5%?

A multi is actually dearer due to the cost of the outdoor unit. Personally I much prefer single splits as they give you far more flexibility of operation
How can 3 supplies, 3 condenser complete with 3 compressors be cheaper than 1?

We install Daikin wall units and their 'silent' night setting gives an extremely low db rating which is suitable for night operation -However a good ducted unit well fitted will be even quieter.

We obviously don't buy from the same place, the price was for a basic back to back.. As Daikin D1 approved installers we get systems at special rates.
I did not include mains supply but we usually pick up from a socket in the room. I cannot quote for anything trickier because I haven't seen the actual location. As regards the VAT again I urge you to check the ECA website for clarification.

Again because of the cost of the outdoor unit. 2kw splits are as cheap as chips. I did a twin recently -2 x 2.5 kw indoor + 1 x 4kw outdoor (indexed as one was in the bedroom and one in the lounge) and the kit cost me 25% dearer than 2 x 2.5kw splits.
The pipe runs tend to be longer as they've all got to go back to a single point -IE the one outdoor unit. The electrical supply was Part P etc. There are many factors which can affect price.

Yes you may ask, and yes I have, some systems have not been released yet but a word of warning -cheap it ain't
(and having seen it in action and discussed the pro's and cons I remain to be convinced it's going to sell in the quantities forecast)

Richard - what's the relationship, if any, between Daikin and Daikool?[/quote/]

None absolutely nothing to do with Daikin, They maybe trying to be confused with them -Some could possibly call it a cynical cheap trick aimed at fooling the unknowing or the inattentive?

These units are -from their nomenclature- mere re-badges Chinese Gree The type Ebayers absolutely love. They fly off the production line at an alarming rate and each one is badged with a different name -another I've seen is 'All seasons' for example.

I have been offered these at 100 for 1000 quid badged up with any name I wish 'Jollycold air conditioning' anyone??

However I don't- I sell Daikin, Mitsubishi, Hitachi and the odd LG for their art cool range.

Cheers

OK chums - thanks to all for the answers & advice - it was useful.

One last (I think) Q: - can the external unit of a split be mounted horizontally on a flat roof?

not as far as i know.. the oil would run into the pipework..

same reason you should leave a new fridge or freezer for a few hours to settle, if it was tipped at any time to transport it ( usually is, on a sack truck or similar.. ) then the compressor oil runs up the pipework..

This was a Daikin installed mid last year. We're guessing in the early January winds it took a tumble. We arrive in April (I believe) for a maintenance visit

- it was still running a-ok

Back up on it's feet and it's still none the worse for it's experience after it's 3 month lie down

But - WE DO NOT RECOMMEND IT in any way shape or form
