ceiling rose wiring

Hi , on changing 2 light fittings upstairs in my sons wimpey house , which i have done without any problem , i was surprised to find only 1 cable in each light fitting ( black & red wire ),what type of wiring setup is this , where is the switch wire connected

You COULD, but the ceiling rose light would have to be turned on to make the loft light work.

If crooner had come back and said he'd opened the switch and only found one cable there too, then, yes, we could go into more detail.
