Changing light switch from plastic to metal

You sure there isn't one that's been chopped short?

With difficulty is the unfortunate answer.

If you are lucky there may be an earth wire that has been cut back. However if you discover this you MUST check the wire is actually connected to the earthing system before using it.

If not then it's probablly going to be time to rewire that lighting circuit.
