Charity Starts At Home

So you are telling me that the runway was fully operational then??

Throughout the war. The only thing stopping the argentine getting in there was fear of being shot down by harriers.

Ok it transpires you are correct on there being little or no damage to the runway, however i have googled the raid and this is what came up.

What the Black Raids did did do, was to discourage the Argentine Air Force from keeping fast attack aircraft stationed at Stanley.

The runway was never long enough or in good enough shape for the fast jet aircraft the Argentine had and in any event the harriers would have been all over them like flies if they based anything there.

The most impressive thing about the vulcan raids was they arrived overhead in the first place. It was an exercise in navigation and refuelling, nothing much more.

The only argument given for the effectiveness of the vulcan raids was it scared the argies into keeping their interceptors on the mainland in case the vulcans attacked there. This is very unlikely for several reasons.

1) The UK government had no intention of bombing the mainland and said as such (special forces operations excepted)
2) The argentine had already realised their fast jet interceptors were no use over the falklands because the harriers and their new sidewinders were running riot when they did turn up. So they had withdrawn them anyway.

The only reason vulcans were sent down there was so the RAF could get a piece of the action. The Falklands war was mainly a Navy affair with the addition of a few crack units from the army. The RAF didn't get involved in any major shape until Mount Pleasant airfield was built.

SCRAP THE PILE OF OLF JUNK AND DONATE THE PROCEEDS TO A WORTHY CHARITY.
It's gone- same as 99.9% of Moggie 1000s.
That plane was a killing machine- and was soon overtaken by soviet aircraft.
Nostalgia is a wonderful thing- but- Pleeeas--let those killing machines be consigned to the scrapyards.
Vulcan bombers appreciation society is the same .
TOO MUCH money to keep them -- money that would be better spent on the people who are alive today.

Much money to appease a few who like to remember their link with thier past.
130k this year- 230k next year. Please let it go and keep your memories in your head and in the photos you cherish.

YOU REALLY ARE A CUFFIN IDIOT!!

Get your facts right, i did 1yr on 617Sqn Vulcans at Scampton followed 3yrs at Wattisham 111Sqn Lightning mk 3s and 2yrs at Gutersloh 19Sqn on Lightning mk6s. The Lightning was an interceptor, not a killing machine, RAF camps had two Sqns, and the Sqns would rotate every 4 weeks to do a stint of QRA (quick readiness alert) believe me! i did my fair share, i asked the jockey one night why he had been scrambled to which he replied, the usual, some civvy a/c had lost his radar, he had intercepted and guided the other plane into Hamburg airport.

In its time the Lightning was never overtaken or superceded by a Russian a/c, the Mig 21 i think it was that defected was taken to pieces by the Yanks, it was made of stainless steel or something similar, that is better than balsa wood, but only just.

The Lightning also flew rings around the Phantom and Starfighter, the only a/c that showed the Lightning a clean pair of heals was the TSR2 which was scrapped by the Labour government.

And as for the Vulcan! how many squaddies lives did it save by bombing Stanly runway, also putting the Yanks in their place when they claimed their radar system was infallable, nothing could invade their airspace without them knowing, so a Vulcan shadowed a Boeing 747 into JFK, the first they knew about it was when they asked air traffic permission to land.

And YOU sir- are a chuffin sentimental fool.
Bombed Stanley runway ? Killed people ? ok- not of our country --but still people with families , who did as they were told to do.
And WHAT FOR ? A little Minute chunk of the planet- that 99.9 % of anyone with a brain- would not choose to live there.
How much has that fiasco cost us and still does every day right now ?.
Know what I would have done - ? I'd have said to Argies- here it is-- TAKE IT shove it up your little brown ringpieces. Then I would have given the residents of Malvinas 1 Million pounds each- and found them a little island somewhere to live on.
Millions and millions of £££s saved for UK.

Maggie was brave to take the step she did- I admire her for that--but- in retrospect-- what has it gained the UK ? sord all,.

Well what can i say? A certain chappy has stolen my thunder and PP has taken advantage and jumped on the bandwagon, ok i've already said i got that wrong and eating humble pie BUT i notice you have said sweet FA about the Lightning that you accused of being.

1. A killing machine.

2. Superseded by Russian a/c

Perhaps you could enlighten me, or do you need others to do it for you and again take the glory for yourself?
