Commissioning a home extension: Tips for a Newbie?

We want to undertake our first ever major home improvement project and pull down the existing (badly built) adjoining garage and replace with a single storey extension in order to yield a larger kitchen, a downstairs cloakroom and a small study.

I'm really clueless about the process that I need to be undertaking now, including estimating the budget, selecting an architect, getting quotes from builders, avoiding common pitfalls, etc.

Is there an online guide for first timers, or anybody kind enough to post some tips?
