Hi,

I am in the process of renovating a home gym where I live and i really want to plaster board this ceiling and remove the central beam to make it a flat surface.

Does anyone know if I would be ok to take this beam out? The width is 4 meters and its a flat roof with felt on it.

thanks,

Its there to give mid span support to the roof joists.
If you remove it the roof will sag in the middle.

You are Joking! right

Not joking it seems very over the top for the size of the room and whoever has built it has made it too low so tall people bang their heads on it. I was just wondering if it is needed for such a small roof span.

what size section are the joists?
what is the total span from outer wall to outer wall.
whats the height from the bottom of the beam to the floor?

it could be that if a midway support is needed then you could replace the beam with a much smaller section RSJ?
