Do I need to use cable with an earth wire ??

Illegal? Clipping an extension lead to a wall is now illegal?

I planned to use some old lawnmower cable which doesnt have an earth wire ....The guy at B&Q said I MUST have an earth if I am using a proper wall socket but if need be I will use a 4 way extn attached to the wall

Yes, haven't you heard, it's another one of the government's H&S laws, they'll be monitoring our thoughts next...but seriously folks, I really appreciate the advice and I will be having the electrics fitted by an electrician - a proper job for my workbench area !

I don't disagree with any of that, Banal. I disagree with your assertion that it was illegal to clip have a flex from a plugtop clipped along a wall to an outlet.

Of course it would be illegal (and very stupid) to use two core flex - and the lawnmower (your favourite!) flex the OP mentioned was probably only 1mm^2 - for such a thing.

straightsix; it is not a complicated job to do this safely;

(or one of these is the circuit is not alread RCD protected http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/CM4904.html )
And place it next to the socket you were going to plug in to, then spur from the socket in to the supply terminals of the FCU with 2.5^2mm cable - then run the 2.5^2mm cable from the load terminals out to your new sockets.

However, (and no offence intended) given what you have said about using 2core flex, maybe the best option is to do as you've said and get an electrician in to do it.

But that is what the OP was proposing, and that is what I was asserting was illegal.

Please make your mind up what it is you want to disagree with, and then if it's rational, and you can explain why it's logical and reasonable for you to disagree, then please come back and try again.
