So, AFAIK the last time steel tariffs were used by the US in 2002 26,000 jobs were lost until they were removed.
In the 1930's the US pursued and isolationist policy (tariffs) which resulted in the great depression, tit for tat tariffs from other countries and was a contributing factor to the start of WW2.
So in summary. I don't think it's a great idea.
