Earth fly @ socket walkthrough?

Presumably the live and neutral pins of the plug just protrude through the back of the socket, looking at those square holes.

Not quite - the plug pins are a few mm inside the holes when the plug is inserted. Still very poor though.

The earth strip is only fixed at a single point in the centre and bends when the screw is tightened. The terminal screws are also some strange slot/cross hybrid mess, which no screwdriver will fit into properly.
