This belongs to an old bloke I know (Ex. electrician) who let me have a look at his CU because he knew I was training to become an electrician, so this is not a job.
I was quite concerned about what I saw, however he has no interest in changing anything.
Recent work looks like it has been done, i.e main protective bonding to gas.
No testing was carried out.

you do it for 8-12 hours a day, the last thing you want to do is come home and do your own..

It certainly looks to be of its time.

Hard to say wether it is unsafe or not, but there is nothing I can see which is worthy of a code 1.

It might be prudent to do a couple of EFLI tests just to make sure corrosion hasn't got the better of that earth bar covered in verdigris.

You should see some of the wiring in my house. I ought to be ashamed of my self.

There's about a billion code 2's though! Proper job that one, i've seen better though. I'll see if i can find the picture of a place i went to change a room stat in in Grantham. Hadn't been touched since the 50's with a timber consumer unit (a piece of fine carpentry with veneered door) and fused neutrals! Proper out of the arc stuff.

I fully appreciate that point of view. And I vaguely remember reading various other posts on here that have suggested some of the pro-sparks on here may not own electrical installations up to quite the standards of those they install. So is it true, then? Do all you pro's on here have installations that look pretty much like that one the OP has found?

Interesting that nobody has condemned it. This is about the worst I've seen so far, but I do have limited experience.


I popped back to check if they was any continuity between the two earth bars.
When clipped onto the actual bars I got >2000Ω

However when I clipped onto the tangle of CPC's above the CU to the MET, I got 1.42Ω so there is some continuity, but quite high for such a short distance I thought.

This is a large 3 story house, I would be interested in the loop impedance at the extremities.

Could not isolate the supply to do any further tests unfortunately.

Is it me or with that earth block external to the fuse board where is the earthing too the metal work of the actual fuse board itself. That's be a good one if it's an unearthed exposed conductive part!
