I had builder come and to fit a marble back panel with wooden surround he has told me it can not be done. This is because the the marble back panel when flush with the wall leaves about 1.5 inches between it and the wooden surround. Can any help I have already paid him for removal of the old fire surround etc and don't really want to return the new one I brought.[/b]

Why are you getting the builder to fit the fire surround?
Are you getting a gas fire or a stove?
If yes, why not get the fitter to instal the surround. Chances are the builder will not know what services are required and likely will end up making a hash of it.
