full rewire in 2 bed2 floor house

evening guys,

Iam looking for some advice regarding a full house rewire. As i understand i require a ring circuit upstairs, downstairs and for the kitchen. I would like to pull all the cable through to each location and back to themain box where i will pay an electrician to connect, check and sign off.

The only problem is that i have no idea what is required i.e. the cable size and configuration.

Can anyone help as really have no money to pay for someone else to do all the hard work.

Thanks in advance and any diagrams etc would be welcome

The only advice I can give you is contact some recommended electricians (part P registered) and see what they will allow you to do.

We are not allowed to sign off other peoples work, but some will allow you to do some of the donkey work.

That is one possible option, although there are plenty of others.

That can save money, but you MUST get the electrician involved before any work is started. They are also the person to consult about cable types, locations and other important issues.

But there is still a need to use a properly competent electrician to do a major job like rewiring a house, and someone who writes "As i understand i require a ring circuit upstairs, downstairs and for the kitchen" does not appear to have anywhere near enough competence....

But he is at least asking all the right questions/soliciting advice.

I might be doing a complete rewire in June and I am only a Handyman with limited electrical knowledge. But the job will be signed of by a NICEIC registered electrician.

I hope you are meaning that you are helping a NICEIC electrician do a rewire, as then it's his work he's signing off and not yours!

How do you know what he doesn't know?

More importantly, how does he know what he doesn't know, and therefore needs to ask about?

It's the old "unknown unknowns" situation, and there are a number of very real problems.

• If he has no idea something even exists he won't ask about it, no matter how important it is.
• In any event asking questions as and when they occur to him is not structured enough, and will take an inordinate amount of time.
• Anyone whose approach to designing an installation is his "As I understand....." is an extremely long way away from knowing everything he needs to know, so far, in fact, that I genuinely don't think he could ever get there just by asking questions here.

Have you checked what your council's attitude is to DIY electrical work?

If they are one of the delinquent ones you may be forced to choose between not notifying and just getting an electrician to do the work anyway..

If they are one of the delinquent ones you may be forced to choose between not notifying and just getting an electrician to do the work anyway..

Pointing out the hard reality of the options someone may be forced to choose between is not advising them to make a particular choice.
