Hi folks!

Mother Secure has two side passages, one with a 7 foot high metal gate & one with a wooden one.

The wooden one has rotted and she would like a metal one to replace.

The existing metal gate is hinged on the house side and the latch is fixed to a 6 foot post put in specially for the job.

The wooden gate is adjacent to a 4 foot post.

Without ripping up the blockwork and next doors slabs, it is impossible to change the 4 foot post for a taller one.

Would it be OK to fix the latch for the new metal gate as low as 3 foot 6" on a 7 foot gate?

The other latch is higher as the post is higher.

Will a latch half the height of the gate give it enough support?

Thanks for your help.

if you can brace the post using a head piece, like the top of a doorframe, either to the house, or to the other fence, or to both, it will be a lot more rigid. I realise this will mean increasing its height, but you might be able to strap or screw something to it.

hinged side should always be fixed to the house as it will stand up to weight and movement better than a post

put the latch where you want as it shouldnt be providing any support at all, as john says its the hinges that are important
