Hard wiring a video doorbell.

Wife wants one of these and I don’t want a power lead dangling down the wall to a wall wart.

Connection between inside and outside is ok (long drill) but I want to hide the transformer in the garage about 5-6 metres away. Transformer is 15 v 1.2 a output and wall unit claims to be the same.

Simplest route for the power feed is via the hall light switch and up the conduit into the eaves for about a metre. Can I do this or do I need to separate them?

Now need to look up voltage drop!

You can't have mains wiring and ELV (15V in this case) in the same conduit.

Winston, you need to make it clear when you are quoting from 'Winston's Wiring Regulations', and not BS7671. The real regulations allow this provided all cables are insulated to the highest voltage present.

Perhaps one shouldn't assume. But assuming he was using bell wire, which is not insulated to 253v, you can't run mains and ELV in the same conduit.

Then you should have told them which cable to use; not simply that it can't be done which is not true.

No. The (assumed) bell wire would not be insulated or sheathed to 253v.
