How about we don't mention Part P, Building Regulations, notification in reply to posts or just a generic reminder for people to check for themselves what their own BC might or might not require. :D

This might go someway to restoring the proper purpose of this forum.

Top idea ricicle, how about:-

"What you are planning may be notifiable under part P of the building regulations, please be aware of your legal obligations - see sticky for more information"

then put a sticky at the top of the forum that I suggest is written by BAS (not being funny here, he knows this stuff and is happy to write about it so he could o an essential guide as a permanent feature).

How about we all mention it, that way the posters will definatly be aware, no one reads the stickys, if they did there would be about 1/3 of the posts made.

It does get quite tedious hearing it on every other reply posted, what about a pop up when Electrics UK is selected on the forum menu and user has to "agree" to reading the Part P info.

Tone:

Hasn't Ban already posted Part P bumpf on this site?

Perhaps some of you 'sticky' enthuastists could widen the scope of those 'stickys' to cover every aspect of wiring? That way, there would be no need for discussion, exchange of views or light-hearted banter, would there?

The enquirer would simply 'click' on the appropriate sticky and it would then be goodbye forum - hello Google......

Keep music live!

agree with most of the above.

Problem is, whatever the regular posters here agree to do , it will never stop a.n.other sparky coming along and jumping in again, in the belief that they are the first to offer such info and gain a spot of kudos.

Back to square 1, me thinks

Perhaps, instead of a sticky (which not many people read) a topic which puts the information regarding Part P, BR's, links or info of how to contact the relevant BCOs etc. in a concise, digestable manner (which then the mods could lock to stop it becoming long-winded and tedious)

and then, whenever the question comes around again, it could be linked to, for the benefit of that particular OP.

Perhaps after that, we could ask a few simple questions to the OP (like a basic english comprehension test) to deduce whether they did bother to read it or not.

If they can't be bothered, then we could reciprocate and just move on, rather than going down the cut/paste frenzy route..

This may keep fuelling fresh debate, whilst hopefully reducing the number of threads lost due to bickering, just a thought....

come to think of it, something similar regarding diversity and cookers may be helpful aswell, as that seems to be a topic which starts from fresh everytime.

Set up a word counter system. It would need to keep individual counts for each poster in each thread.

Set triggers so that as soon as a person has contributed say 1000 words to a thread he or she is automatically locked out of the thread. Everyone else can continue to contribute until their word count reaches 1000 when they too are locked out.

Perhaps better to use a charactor counter then it would be impossible (?) to cheat by using words like

YouAreOneOfTheMostIgnorantPeopleThatEverWalkedIntoAnyShed

As secure pointed out, there's been an article here, either in the Wiki, which has a sticky at the top of the forum:

folder_wiki.gif
Wiki: Please see if the answer to your query is already covered by the Wiki

or as a sticky in its own right, before we had the Wiki, for nearly 5 years.

Since April 5th, 2006 to be precise: //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=49116

But unfortunately people don't read the Wiki, or stickies, as you've just demonstrated ;)

It's our duty to give people the best advice we can, and to be honest about it. Sometimes the best advice does depend on people's attitude to the law and to what they've already signed themselves up for. Even now, several years after the introduction of Part P we still see people arriving here with tales of woe about having done the wiring for an extension themselves and now Building Control won't give them a completion certificate, and the chances are that when they originally requested Building Regulations approval for the project they agreed to their LABCs default requirement that the electrical work be done by a registered electrician, either by default or by unthinkingly copying the standard text from the LABCs website into their application.

If someone has done that then he is not best served by us telling him anything except "get an electrician who can self-certify".

BAS ....you've already used 200 odd words on this post!

What about the 'pop up' suggestion from BigJon? hand the responibility back to the poster...

problem with that is this forum is populated by people whose identity is unknown, so ticking a box saying 'i agree' or 'i have read it' doesn't really account for much.

A bit like the EULAs on most software - click and proceed, no reading required.

If there is a minimal amount of 'what did you learn from reading that thread we showed you?' and the response that comes demonstrates it has been read, then game on, advise away, give them all the help/rope they want!

if they give it the blag, so demonstrating that the OP has not read it and doesn't give a fig about laws and notification etc, then perhaps we should adopt sheddy's mentality (sans attitude) and suggest that the OP gets an electrician/goes away/f's off and dies

However, the drawback here is that again, even if the regulars here agree to 'no more help until ...' it will not stop a.n.other spark from wandering in and putting everything back to how it is now.

I wonder if any of the mods/admin have a view on this?
