"European leaders are intensely aware that America’s EU strategy (as well as China’s and Russia’s) is likely to be an effort to “divide and rule”.

With its 28 national governments (soon to be 27) and ponderous governance structure, the EU is a tempting target for such tactics. But, for all their differences, the bloc’s leaders understand the strategic importance of their unity on trade, particularly if a global trade war is indeed in the offing. The EU retains a remarkable ability to turn outsiders into members of the club

Small countries are at the mercy of American pressure on trade. But the EU’s economy is collectively larger than that of the US. The size of the European internal market offers its nations some form of protection against bullying from Washington, as well as the possibility of meaningful retaliation. Indeed, further retaliatory measures are being prepared in Brussels should the US carry through on its threats to the European car industry.

The EU’s awareness of the strategic and economic value of its internal market is reflected in the strong and unified position it has taken on the Brexit negotiations. British attempts to “cherry pick” some of the internal market’s benefits have been firmly rebuffed."

The EU is cutting FTA with third countries faster than we could ever do because they have been doing this for a long time and they have way more collective power.

Between the EU, China, Japan, USA we will be back of the queue.

When will realisation hit you that the USA will not cut us some sweetheart deal. If WTO agreements were so great why would countries want FTA?

Not one salient answer.

You just proved your own point YOU IDIOT.

TRADE DEALS TAKE A LONG TIME EVEN BETWEEN WESTERN DEMOCRACIES.

Yes Cameron requested Obama to say that because in working out EU post referendum planning which included direct talks with the US administration the US made it clear the UK would be at the back of the queue. That was with an administration that was pro trade. The current anti-trade administration you will be waiting a long time.

Quoted "Tony Abbott managed. He simply instructed his civil servants to deliver trade deals with the top three markets for Australia: Japan, China and South Korea, and to do this in one year. It was simple: do what you can in that time-frame. And it was done."

You Damn blinkered fool.

I thought Donald Tusk's trump rebuke was a bit ill informed on defence spending. I can't see how you can add up all the countries in the EU and compare it to Russia. Getting the EU 27 to act as one, in a conflict would be harder for the EU than it would be for Russia to reassemble the USSR.

If the EU was at risk from Russia I am sure the EU countries would act as one, and/or under NATO.
Look at the response to the annexation of Crimea. Even though Ukraine is not in NATO.

Ukraine is neither an EU member , nor a NATO member.
Had they been, things would probably be very different. Ukraine wants EU and NATO membership.
As it is, there is considerable pro-EU/Nato and pro-Russian schisms in Ukraine. But the western nations gave Russia some serious warning over any further encroachment into Ukraine.
If the Crimean people requested assistance against Russian intervention I suspect that either there would not have been any encroachment in the first place, or a negotiated withdrawal would ensue.

Does Trump have a point on the fact NATO members don't contribute equally. Germany and France less than the 2%.
