I know it may have been the worst job a carpenter has made to my house.

Got old stair post clad with 10mm timber and gaps was filled with filler. This keep cracking when season change and temperature in the house rise.

Would be good to open the gap between the 2 timber and fill it with something?

Any tips, advise would be appreciated

Thanks

What type of joints are in the corners? What species of timber was used? Encapsulating ot cladding columns and even timber posts is quite a common thing to do in interior fitout work (e.g. shop fitting) but it is normally undertaken with materials such as MDF and plywood rather than softwood

This so called carpenter by trade has used softwood and did not made any joint just stack the 2 panel. If nothing work I may need to stick a corner profile to cover this ****e. Any idea?

TBH it sounds as though he has pinned the cladding together without any glue or screws, so it will always move and the joints will crack and recrack.

A photo would really help
