I Don't Know The Answer....

I did it completely wrong and still got the wrong answer..... Oh the shame.

I'd have to have a fresh head on me to work that out without paper and pencil.

When I test people's basic maths for job interviews I always let them have paper and pencil. I'm amazed how young people just freeze when they aren't allowed an electronic gizmo. Most of them are just maths numpties to be honest.

( I get into trouble for testing peoples maths but I always do it just to see)

Well working at McDonalds, does have it's perks (though I do think you should give customers the correct change) . Cheer up Chapeau, think of all those leftover filet o fish you can take home for the cat.

560 seeds fail to germinate, the total amount is divided by 25, not 24. A ratio is the two numbers added together. If you mix sand and cement 4:1 then you put 5 shovels in in total.
Paul.
Ah, but.... SS used the word 'rate' then typed in a ratio, using the colon ':'.
So I reckon one could swing either way.
Rate of One in twenty four, one not good twenty three good.
Ratio of one to twenty four, one not good twenty four good.

14000 seeds are planted. The germination failure rate is 1:24. How many seeds germinate?

Of those that geminate, only 5/6 of them grow into plants.

How many grow into plants?

The failure rate is one in every 24 as stated above, but as again stated if the failure ratio was 1:24 then for every 25 seeds 1 wouldn't germinate 24 would

So..... based on rate then the answer is (14000 - (14000 /24)) * 5 /6 = 11181 (11180.5555)

And on ratio (14000 - (14000 /25)) * 5 / 6 = 11200

So take ur pick, I would imagine they probably mean ratio rather than rate.

A rather serious typo.

Yes, I used the ":", indicating a ratio. My brain instructed my fingers to type the word "rate".

And I didn't even notice.

The shame.

Hardly something to beat yourself up over !! I have no doubt you understood the underlyings. :)

Badly written question, chastise the poser (and of the question !)
:D

Well I am not gloating!! I had to take a numerical reasoning test last week. For the life of me I couldn't understand the first question, took me nearly 10 mins to give up trying to fathom it out, so on a 20 question 15 minute test, I numerically reasoned that guessing the remainder would yield a slightly less tragic result than trying to work them out!!! All in all a disaster !!!
