Well I would like to thank all you people that posted advice. Basically it said 'buy a new one' which is not what I wanted to hear. I should like to tell you the outcome. I called Ideal they would send someone out to fix it for 230 quid and fix it, unless it was the heat exchanger which would be an additional 175 +vat. Their engineer said it was 60:40 (against) needing a new heat exchanger. I thought that was not good odds. They would not accept that it was a rogue boiler but said that if it looked as though we would have to spend 400 plus, they would sell us a new equivilant ISAR for 411.25 So that is what we did. I have been told that the ISAR is not the best, but it is well tested and very efficient. It has now been installed so my daughter need not to go to the Gym everyday just to use the shower - still she has lost some weight so there was a benefit there.
So all in all she came out of it quite well, new boiler that is guaranteed for 15 months at a price (including installation) less than the standard retail price.
I hope that this information may help others that have suffered by purchasing a Response.
So - a good result and thanks again - your advice was heeded.
