its already been answered in trade talk.

Stupidity in the current climate

it is hard for us established to keep getting new work at the moment. I wouldn't start up a new business at the moment (in fact just off loaded my other business) if it were me

start up costs include

personal insurance
liability insurance
gas registration
poss other registrations
advertising
stationery
National insurance
VAT (when you reach the rate)
telephone home/ofice and mobile
vehicle purchase, tax and insurance

sorry but the list goes on

I know the above posts might appear somewhat negative, but it is a difficult market at the moment, especially if you want to do gas fires, which are avoided by many an RGI due to the low profit margins. Hours of p*ssing around with surveys etc. and then trying to install into a builders opening which doesn't even begin to comply with regs. On top of that, the customer has paid feck all for the fire, has been told by B&Q it only takes half an hour to fit and expects you to do it for less than a pint of beer.

That corner of the market is already pretty much covered by the likes of B&Q and the independent retailers, all of whom have their own established installers.

If you do decide to go it alone, be prepared to both make a loss and work twice the hours until you have established your own client base.

You could corner the market in fitting flueless gas fires as no one wants to fit them. ;)

But if your wanting to set up just doing fire installs then its going to be tough going, you could contact some of the big house builders to see if they will allow you to price for fire/surround installs but as you prob know most sites have just about closed down so not a lot about.

Also with sites shutting down there is a lot of guys out there now just trying to earn some money.
Not the best of times for a newbie trying to specialise without a customer base

We install gas fires for a local supplier. 18 months ago we averaged 2-3 a week. In the last 6 months we have installed 2.
(glad that work was just to fill in some free time)
Even some of the gas fire suppliers are finding it hard to sell their products.

We have become experts at removing gas fires and the pipe work.

The shops fitters do all the work on builders opening and installing the surrounds.

The shop,s fitters (Hetas) are booked up till at least June, fitting multi/solid fuel stoves and fires

As already mentioned, theres not much profit in just installing gas fires.
