How long would you say a new domestic electrical installation would last before needing re-wiring, in a normal environment? Its just a customer has an installation without CPCs in the lights, so obviously before 1966, needs a re-wire and wants to know how long a new installation should last.

Done properly then a minimum of 25 years IMO.

Its hard to say really, as the cable will last for ages, but as useage habits and technology changes the installation will probably become outdated.

So would you say basics would last min 25yrs but new regs will come in at some point and alterations would be needed?

well his installation is still servicable, and thats from 1966. i think if installed with care and attention that good quality PVC cable could last indefinatly, the only time i see faults with it is when it's been poorly terminated anywhere or when it's been ran near or touching hot pipes or in polystyrene or direct sunlight. It doesnt degrade like rubber.

Yes, a visual inspection and insulation & continuity test will give the best indication.

At that age, beware of aluminium conductors. They squash & make bad contact.

Also you'll find no earth in lighting (as has been stated) and no sleeving on cpc as well as no or undersized bonding.

recently re-wired a house built in 1953, it was all wired in very early pvc twin or twin and earth cable apart from the cooker cable which was rubber. this was done as the rubber cable was gradually being phased out. the pvc cable was in excellent condition, only the installation didn't meet today's requirements. i think pvc cable virtually lasts forever in the right conditions. it's remarkable how little flat cable has changed over the years.
